Breeding programmes

According to DEFRA’s UK version of the 2016/1012 Zootech regulations every breed of livestock should have an approved breeding programme. However these are not necessarily publicly available documents. Those of you who are pedigree breeders does your breed have one and do you know where to find it and what’s in it? It should contain the aims and objectives of every breed society and guide breeders in selecting breeding stock. Is it fit for purpose? Have you read the Zootech regulations? How many societies obey them? Just curious.

We gave em some flannel. Seemed to shut em up.

I am heartily sick of the bank of wunchers though. Constantly re-inventing both themselves and their requirements.
Self sustaining parasitic organisation, serving no use....s'far as I can see.

Yeah, despite my eyes glazing over after just two paragraphs :banghead:

We (Lincoln Longwool Sheep Breeders Association) have one - can't remember much about it. We decided we had something that was good enough pre covid, IIRC.

Does it fully apply to us (UK) since Brexit?

Our society chairman is currently attending a round of meetings, with Defra and the Secretary of State, where parts of it are being chewed over to facilitate export of breeding stock to Europe.

Like @egbert says, it's the biggest load of bollox since the last load of bollox 😠

Yes it does apply to us - so far, but things may change. There are a lot of good things in them, particularly for rare breeds, but DEFRA has pretty well ignored them for years. Have heard about discussions recently- why now?

Which breed(s)? What’s a wuncher 🤣?
I'm involved with several pedigree breeds - although ironically, my dearest critters are unregistered pure bred, and predate the pedigree herd book by ....well, very likely centuries.
Rather not say for which I've encountered this org. PMing.

Oh, you might look up 'spoonerisms'

FAnGR (The Farm Animal Genetic Resources Committee) demonstrate in their arrogance and conduct all that is wrong with the civil service.. Their interpretation of the EU Animal Breeding Regulation 2016 1012 https://www.legislation.gov.uk/id/eur/2016/1012 appears to be entirely at odds with that of any reasonable person. Gold plating as usual.
Try creating a new breed of livestock and find out how this unelected, unaccountable anonymous group will try to make life difficult for you,
Despite their use of public money and resource to try and strangle the Sheeted Somerset Cattle project at birth they have failed and have demonstrated that they are irrelevant in the real world. Unless your breed society members need to export they should be ignored.
If ever MPs get to grips with thinning down the bloated bureaucracy that is the civil service FAnGR should be at the top of the cull list.

I can imagine how difficult that was - they do appear to be unaccountable.
In 2021 they lumped together the Original Populations with the larger North American populations of several breeds and, when asked why, they said it was in case they were counted twice, which was ridiculous. The result of that decision was that the OP rare breeds were removed from the UK Breeds at Risk List. When asked who had they asked about the decision they said “industry experts” and when asked who those were they said they were not permitted to reveal names.
They have now changed their name to the UKGLE committee and their latest newsletter says that they are asking for more powers, particularly to prevent adoption of new breeding programmes. Yet they cannot enforce the Zootech regulations as they stand - they are supposed to be the “Competent Authority” - incompetent as far as I can see. So unfortunately they seem unlikely to be “culled”.
