How’s calving going?

Really well, coming up for half calved after 3 weeks. Cows are calving easily, plenty of bull calves but I have managed to get them sold to be reared.

Heifers that have calved in this year are a dream, cluster on, milk out and no fuss or kicking.

Its been a kind winter which we needed as I was worried about silage stocks but now Im concerned I wont empty the clamp or graze all the kale.

All Patrol

What sort of £ do you get for you’re bull calves?

Between £40 and £80, usually average out at £50 for FR bull calves at less than 2 weeks old.

I dont have the time, space or inclination to rear them so get them sold as quick as possible and it covers the cost of the semen and AI as most cows have only had one service.

What swung Jacob for you? Samson and bryster available sexcel presumably yours is conventional. Using premier on chads and others

Well to be honest after hearing good remarks about chad I’d a look at his sons, liked Jacobs fertility, fat & proteins and positive in milk. For me using him on Holsteins that’s my main reasons. Do you reckon I’ve made a bad choice?

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
