Not every company has access to the fibre networks and you have to dig quite deep to find out who does.
Recently openreach installed fibre to my area as far as the pole in the road. Vodafone ( my current supplier) tried to convince me they could supply fibre to my premises but were lying they tried to tell me they could improve my speed from the current 8mbs to 25mbs on full fibre ...I would have believed them but I was sceptical about only 25mbs on full fibre.
I dug deeper and discovered that only about a dozen companies had access to the fibre network and Vodafone weren't one of them
Eventually signed up with BT who last week connected the final bit of fibre to the house and I'm now on full fibre at 50mbs

We have the main fibre lines go past out gate 20m from the house but they say we cannot get fibre to premises which drives me nuts so stuck on 2mb at the farm

You can DIY your system like we have done as our internet was shite. This is what I have just now, usually sitting around 90 - 100 for the most part, but we do get drops to just above 40 with weather issues, but still doesnt drop out. We have numerous devices, wife working at home by zoom etc, TV's on Netflix / Sky etc - and we are more than happy.

You just need a 4G signal

how much data a month are you using? I thought those 4g deals got quite pricey towards the higher end but if that's all you can get you have to pay for it I suppose.

You can use upto 1000GB month although they state Unlimited, but if you do that frequently they may turn you into commercial then it costs.
So far we are using 500-600 GB month, so not near the threshhold - and we pay £34 month, which is cheaper than the linked service in this thread - as they are £40 month for 40 GB average.

We are happy with it so far - and we had not other viable offers. The local rural system was intermittent, cost more and had slower speeds.

Sounds like you are on fibre to the cabinet. Which means the connection from the cabinet is still on copper. Where speed falls away with distance. Fttp is a different beast. Fibre cable all the way with no drop in speed
We currently have around 1mb on ordinary internet. BT delivered fibre router on Saturday which goes live sometime before 11.30 tomorrow. This is from cabinet in village perhaps 3/4 of a mile away.
Expected to get between 7 and 13 with minimum of 5mb or our money back, which is worthless as it's €30 per month same as ordinary broadband.
Will let you know what it's like tomorrow.

That might be the thing in my situation. Even though fibre cable is 250m away, will they simply hook us up from the exchange in the village, over a mile away?

Try for FTTP
If they give you FTTC & it`s coming 1 mile you will not get a lot of speed so in that case looking at EE or similar mobile broadband could be better

Can you see these things on local poles. if so you will have access to FTTP

I'm virtually attending a webinar tomorrow night, if my broadband speed allows, on 4G broadband using the cell network. Or that is what I assume its about. This is hardly relevant to someone that has fibre-optic so close by but thought I'd mention it as an option to those that can get a mobile signal near to home or office but not a worthwhile wired signal.
I'll know more by Tuesday.

We use mobile dongles for all our internet connections
40gb monthly allowance and as fast as we need for both farm and pleasure

What sort of cost is that?
I've just downloaded Zoom and registered for the webinar. It's a bit early yet, at 19.28, as it isn't due to start until 20.00, but I thought I'd better prepare because I've not used Zoom before. In fact it took less than two minutes to sort out by following simple instructions I received via email this afternoon.

That's very good indeed. The broad spread of cost mentioned during the webinar was between £20 and £50/ month depending on provider. There is a grant of up to £800 available for equipment and installation. I would need a chimney mounted ariel and router which would probably cost almost all of that but it would transform my service performance. I speed tested earlier and got 3MB/s download and 5 upload on my landline. Should expect between 30 upload and 50 download easily on 4G by the look of it, as I am about 1 mile from the mast, but not quite line of sight.

Downside is 10m Wi-Fi range of dongle so covers a room or so but is, of course, mobile so you can put it in a pocket and take it with you.
