Bugger. I think I'm becoming de-classiced

Aye-up.

It's been wet here this morning, so after a bit of soil sampling I thought I might treat myself to an afternoon of faffing about with my JD 2850 and 3 furrow reversible KV plough.

I jump in the cab and turn the key. She winds over but won't start. Never mind, it's not been moved for about 8 weeks at least. Give her a rest, wind over again. Nothing. I notice that the fuel gauge is reading low, which is unusual because I usually keep things topped up.

I get out and prime the lift pump for a while. I drop a stick into the fuel tank, 1/4 full, should be ok. I check all the fuel lines, all looks well.

I get back in, wind her over again. Nothing. No smoke at all.

It's only then I notice...... The stop knob is pulled out.

Pillock.

Eh we all do it! Funny how you never look for the obvious cause isn't it? I am amazed how well my Stihl FR130T brushcutter starts in the spring having not been used for months (Well, like all my Stihl Stuff really) but this spring the little bugger just wouldn't have it at all.:scratchhead: I took the plug out , removed the air filter , checked the fuel flow to the carb etc.etc., check all the usual suspects...... only then did I realise that I had not turned on the ignition . Then of course when I DID switch it on it started first pull didn't it!.
I couldn't get the central heating radiator in the conservatory to work the other day. It is on a separate circuit to the rest of the central heating and I was just about ready to get a new thermostat when my wife pointed out that the tap next to the radiator had been turned right off. (Blame my 2 year old son for that one) :sneaky:

For the benefit of younger TFF members I feel you should explain just what a "stop knob" is

:D:D:D

You never know what that could mean now!!

When men were men and real tractors were in regular use, a driver had to go to a huge amount of trouble to stop the engine. This involved pulling a dashboard mounted cable knob marked "Pull To Stop". Then, after all that, the driver had to actually turn the ignition key to the "Off" position too!!

I know!!!! Pure madness!!!

Imagine having to do all that now, just to stop the engine. Some young drivers would get RSI.

My tractor doesnt have a sensor and audible alarm to alert me to the fact that some dork (that would be me) had left the knob in the stop position, hence my total ineptitude today when trying to start this old shed of a machine.

I for one am pleased that there are more bleeps and flashing lights in new kit. These new machines can mither me more than even my wife can, therefore preventing me from making such daft mistakes.

My car has a sensor and alarm to tell me when I open my door.......

I know..... I've just opened the fookin' door myself, with my own bare hand.

I used to get that years ago on our DB880 yard tractor. You pull the stop knob OUT to run. I often forgot that and then couldn't start it :banghead:
The throttle lever on our MF 1100 worked in the opposite way to any other ' normal' Fergie of the time ( i.e. push the lever away from you to increase the revs )and l well remember when we had one on demo dad getting confused a few times before he got used to it.

My dad, bless him, always leaves tractors in gear. He also bizarrely pushes the stop control knob in, " ready for next time ".
Back in the mid 60's, due to an electrical fault, and the above combination, his Ford 3000 started up on it's own, drove itself across the yard, and embedded itself in a hedge.

I always leave my (stop control ) knob out.:)

My old slew decided to start itself up one day, it was happy there ticking over, the trouble was the starter was still working and got rather hot, some idiot thought it was a good idea to grab the battery lead to pull it off
