Build a cheap parlour or go with whats there?

I have an old byre which has a pipeline in it to milk 6 cows at a time. I was looking into the possibility of either renewing all rubbers and going with it or to dig a pit and make a simple parlour out of the pipeline. The shed is about 42 feet long and 17 wide. Dairy is just behind that. Thought was to make it for 8 cows at 50 degree leave 7 feet front and back for cows to go in and out. Cows would have to walk in and turn 90 degrees going in and out. As for the parlour the idea was to make it a simple direct to line job and leave the receiver in the dairy if possible. Just wondering what peoples opinion would be weather it would be worth spending the money on a small start up parlour or keep it the pipeline until funds could allow a better parlour to be built. Probably worth mentioning I would be milking on my own most of the time.

Single side? How many do you want to milk though it? The only advantage I can think is that standing in a pit will be easier for attaching, but the out one in of the Byrne will be faster than a full side of eight

The byre is single side but thought i should have room for double parlour. 6 feet each side for cows and a 5 foot pit. Would be looking at starting around 30 and go from there.

You need about 20' width for a 50 degree parlour . 15' would be wide enough for a 30 degree parlour.
Just don’t make a pit to narrow tho as use to milk in a pit that was seriously narrow and it was horrid as just ducking and diving constantly and no one liked milking there because of the width.

a cramped in herringbone with a narrow pit doesn’t sound fun, better off converting your byre into an abreast with 6 units, make a bigger step up and cut a section out between each cow. Acrs and feeders. Similar to some of the converted abreasts in the thread above
