It depends on what you buy. I don’t think there is a lot of money in the old mules and ok lambs, but good Suffolk and continental ewes and nice lambs are a better buy. I sell old mules and lambs as well as 2 crop Suffolk cross ewes, I think I do well out of selling the mules and not so well out of the Suffolk’s but it really helps my cash flow.

Bought at £180 and sold for £300 last week.
Alright. But how often does that happen?? The last few years the ewe has been £60 too kill in the autumn after weaning. And the lambs have been anywhere from £68-£85 sold July-September 41-45kgs.

I wouldn’t budget ANYTHING on this last 12 months just yet! It’s like the dairy men hitting 36ppl and borrowing heavily against that, only for the price too drop too 27ppl within 6 months...

Not a huge upside for profitability, and more potential hassle (fly strike, footrot, etc) than grazing dairy heifers, in my view.
Someone else’s cattle with them doing everything an you just holding your hand out for a cheque is the easiest option!! But as for sheep being more hassle than cattle, wouldn’t life be boring an to easy if there was no hassle involved, everybody would be a livestock farmer if it was hassle free an the lambs were a £150 every year all year round!! It’s when the lambs are £60 an the cull ewes are £50 that the pretenders bail out the job!! I hope I’m wrong but if people think they won’t have the lamb job back to the £80-£90 mark by the middle of the year then I want some of the drugs there on!! But I am a glass half empty kind of guy so could be totally wrong 😒
