Calving gate height

Does anyone have a jourdain 3-in-1 calving gate and got instructions for what height to fit it please? Never had one before so we’ve no idea, can’t find anything online and the sales rep where I bought it is not responding. Any help appreciated!

I haven't one of those but my answer would be - just above the level of muck there will be in the pen when you use it.

Mine calving gate is about 14 inches above the floor when the pen is emty of muck.

Agreed. I have my own made. Height is great when we have no straw / muck. Come the end of winter the gate is too low when I'm getting calf a drink. So no right answer im afraid.

I usually have to muck out that bit a couple of times in calving which is no bad thing really but you never seem to have mucked it out recently when you want to vink a cow in the middle of the night.

I like a foot or so of hard dung there to let them plant their feet on. Fresh straw on concrete is not the best if the vink is in use.

Is that the gate that is solid from one end to the other or does it hinge on the headstock bit? Do you mind me asking how much it was as I’m after one. I want one that is sold so it can swing round to drive through the shed.

Mine is in a frame that will swing round against the wall, when it is fixed across the pen the smaller gate swings on to the cow.

I wish I had one where the bottom half of this gate swung up to allow suckling as it is, you take rails out - which is brilliant for caesars but the bottom fram is exactly where the calfs feet need to be for suckling. I think mine is an IAE but elderly, they may have changed.

https://www.dpagri.co.uk/shop/ritchie-calving-gate/ sort of thing.

All round I wouldn't try to calve sucklers without a gate now, it is a hundred times easier than not having one, what price getting smashed against the wall when the cow goes mental - which they tend to do around that time anyhow, benign as they are the rest of the year?

It was £815 ex vat, delivery was extra. I haven’t fitted it yet but I’m pleased with the looks of it for the money. By the looks of the hinge it’ll swing 180 degrees, so it’ll go flat against the wall when not in use or out at 45 degrees, and the calving gate bit can go either direction so you can have it for 2 pens. You can also choose which bits of the calving gate you use against the cow - the small middle bit only (if suckling a calf) or the whole of it if you want to keep the cow more secure

Make sure that you fit it so that you can get the cows right side to the wall in case of caesars - sorry if this is teaching granny to suck eggs.

The one I have does allow the yoke to be entered from below as well as above in case the cow goes down and you have to let her out the bottom. I had a very dramatic calving where this saved the cow I think.

Thank you. This one has a quick release for that situation, apparently.
