At half past eleven, the other night, our local Whatsapp group pinged up a message....
"Bit of a strange one, but 7 people are walking backwards and forwards on the Warren."
One of the keepers on the estate that neighbours our grazing, on a SSSI known as the Warren, was out with a thermal imaging device and had spotted this activity over on our side of the boundary.
We lost some in lamb ewes from there in March just before they came home for lambing but these were in a 5 acre enclosure, with a handling pen in it, waiting to come home.
Catching hill ewes with lambs at foot, on the open Warren, would be a lot more tricky.
The keeper kept updating us with reports over the next hour..
"They haven't any dogs with them."
""They're making helluva noise now."
"I reckon it's a bunch of kids."
" They've got a tent in one of the woods."
"5 of them have headed off up Brackenholmes Lane."
The 4 of us in the conversation decided it wasn't worth turning out at that time of night and I said I'd have a look when I went shepherding the next day.
Found the tent straight away (the keeper had given it a what3words pin) ...
.. camp abandoned, nobody in it, just a bloody mess left behind..
Thers's bottles and cans scattered all over the place..
Mucky barstewards.
Alright, they shouldn't have been there, but they weren't hurting much if they'd had the decency to clean up after themselves.
Luckily it's been a wet time, leading up to this week, and their fire didn't present much of a danger but in a dry time the Warren can burn quite easily..
There's no wonder I hate people
