Its looking ok considering that it has had virtually no rain on it but a bit thin.
I was going to ask regarding dessication timing. A lot of the seed heads have turned brown but there are still a lot that are still half green. What are the thoughts on timing as it isn't very clear on the news bulletins?
I know nothing about this crop but time is definitely on your side....
So I would leave it a fortnight and see if it changes much or not and then you still have a fortnight for round up to work

That’s what I’m thinking, if I can get away without spending on glypho then I will.

So made a start in the canary seed yesterday afternoon, I’m just wondering what sort of average yield it should be doing? As it’s first year we’ve grown it I’ve nothing to compare to so no idea what’s good or bad:rolleyes:
Took a bit of tweaking to get the combine to stop skinning grains and still get them all out the heads but seem to be sorted now.
Thanks.

If it's making a tidy sample you are doing well. Chevy seed heads as you could be leaving a lot in them.
Yes I keep checking heads behind the combine and can’t really find anything left in there, think it may have stuffed with the lack of moisture half way through it’s gro stages.
Can find the odd one on the floor behind but no more than I would expect with the size of the seed.
It was looking really well at one point put seemed to die off suddenly.

Ps it may bey doing more than it looks, does it weigh heavy? I’m only going of the combine monitor. Weight is about 600g/l

We had 36 tonnes of 24ha last year and I doubt we’d grow it again except as a cover crop as we’ve got some left over.

We gave it three years.

I think it was a case of, fool me once shame on you; fool me twice shame on me; fool me thrice must have had seed to be used up.

What was the issue? Yields, prices, getting paid. I’ve half said well grow it next year but I’m having major doubts now:eek:

Got paid fine.

Couldn't get yields near what were advertised. Sounds like others aren't getting the yields either. Can't / not supposed to save seed. Seed largest cost. Dust awful. Tricky to thresh. Just overall crapper than a variety of other spring options.

I also do not appreciate being paid by cheque!
