Just to resurrect this thread, ours is on ear already:

And it hasn’t ‘tillered like mad to smother the weeds’ as the salesman in the Premium Crops waffle department claimed it would either:

So now I’ve got a carpet of trash in the bottom and it’s past the last growth stage for a herbicide.

It’s had 60mm of rain in the last week or so. Does anyone give this a chance of covering its costs?

What row spaces are those? Looks quite wide to get it to meet and smother out any weeds.
This was ours 28th of may on 15cm spacing, I’ll get an update pic tomorrow as it’s now in head.

It’s not all looking as pretty as this though, I’ve an 8ac block that was drilled after beet and it’s really suffering! I’m pretty sure it must be some residual herbicide from the beet sprays but I’ll be lucky if it’s even worth cutting:(

As for will it cover costs? Honestly it’s hard to say until it’s on the weigh bridge, it does keep putting heads out for a while though so don’t panic just yet.
Personally I was hoping for a good year with it this year as it’s a relatively cheap easy break crop. I guess only time will tell.

I wonder is that very similar to Lesser Awned Canary Grass?
It’s become a serious weed in crops over here.
It is different to canary grass, it’s much easier to kill although not cheap! Full rate Axel will soon sort it out, also tides up any grass or wild oats at the same time(y)

Standard Claydon 330 mm spacing in a band, yours looks good, much broader leaves.

You’ll probably struggle to get the rows to meet at that width to be honest, however we’ve found it is very variable depending on soil type. It seem to tiller much better on brown soil than sand or clay.
We do give ours a blw spray to help keep it clean agritox & foundation (it’s not strictly on the label though:whistle:)

How much N have you give it? We put 60kg/ha of AN in the seedbed, and if it stops raining long enough it may get another 40kg/ha of 27N 30so3. Ideally I wanted to get it on a week ago but it’s just been not fit! We do have a customer for the straw though so I’m not to worried about thickening it up a bit.

Its had 40kg of N, would have thought that enough on fen soil, it’s had enough rain now, it’s got no excuses and needs to get on with it.
Yes 40kg probably just about enough on fen land, although they told us not to put to much N on last year (we gave it a bit extra anyway:cautious:) then when we sent it in they said it was the best sample and load they had last year:ROFLMAO:

That’s the downside to the row spacing as it’s just to wide for that plant to tiller. Our canary seed definitely did a job on weeds but we combi drilled it and jd750a drilled it.

Well, it had to have a 2nd herbicide.

But it's made a crop!

Not sure if its thick enough or not? We shall see...
Not looking to bad, if you look lower down it’s surprising how many ears will still be emerging.

This is some of ours last week.

I’m a little nervous at the fact we missed the window for the pgr though:nailbiting:.
This is another field against some skyfall, it’s at least a clear 18” taller than the wheat now:facepalm:

Ours didn't get a pgr but it's only just above knee high at the moment.

I’ve got a very nervous contractor who I’m talking about this crop with. What do you think oh clever people of the forum. Would you be able to do it if you relied on a contractor for the combining work? Also we don’t have a home for the straw ourselves ...

Combining the stuff is pretty easy as once it’s ripe it will thresh out no problem, getting a spotless sample though can be a little challenging but we put it over a cleaner so personally I don’t worry about a dirty sample.

Last year we baled all the straw and moved it at the same price as wheat straw, this year despite having a home for it we chopped it all as the weather was against us!
Don’t expect to get rich quick growing the stuff but it’s a cheap break crop.

It's not tricky to grow. Just tricky to make decent ££££ on. You won't get the claimed yields. Our three year average was sub a ton per acre. Then it was a pain to move. And the end user whines about every single sample you take. Then the merchant didn't even pay by bank transfer! Cheques FFS.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
