Yet another blast against livestock farmers and their contribution to climate change this morning on the news.

When are the politicians going to see that endless 'optional' air travel, airports, more cars on the roads etc are contributing to our emissions much more than something everyone requires to maintain health, mental well being and so on i.e. food?

Need to look at the difference in Soil Organic Matter between arable and grassland.. Longer term grassland looks up huge amounts of CO2 compared to arable.
but compared to what is being released though deforestation and fossil fuel use grassland sequestration equates to peeing in the ocean!

We absolutely have to address deforestation and fossil fuel use, but don't ignore the importance of soil carbon.
There is more carbon stored in the soil than the atmosphere and all plant life combined.

Well, to answer your question, why should they so long as farming is happy to bend over and say to Government "yes, it's all our fault, shaft us as hard as you like" ?

I would refer to my comments on this thread:

BBC figures today.
Food 26% of global emissions.
Animal products 14%.
Beef and lamb 7%.
Reduce it by 20% makes 5-6%.

EVERYTHING ELSE WE DO 76%.
In any other scenario would you not try to reduce the big figure first? Pigs and poultry seem to have avoided any reduction yet they have everything hauled to them.

Our farm carbon use through fuel is 3% of the total, mainly making silage and feeding cattle. Once I start ploughing up my permanent pasture for soy or bean sprouts then that will rocket.

Oh, if only I had a10 degree temp rise....

Will you help clear snow?
