So one of my heifers due to calve in 3 weeks has got a small black scabby bit on a teat. She has had Spot On twice and tonight had pour on Swish.

My question is what do others use to prevent fly issues and is there anything else i can do?

The times we did have garlic tubs they really didnt take them. Anyone recommend a fly repellant? From a quick look around there is a lot of products on the market.

Stockholm tar across the udder. The flys hate the stuff

Was just thinking a spray might be easier to apply but if no other suggestions then il try to get my hands on the tar.

Works a treat, quite often use on the summer calvers that have fly problems. Hope it helps
Pebd99 they do a spray and a tin. Is it the tin you use?

Had a really bad year for flies once. Bought tubs of garlic powder. Cooking quality, got it cheap on the internet. Took a few days for them to take to it but then they went mad for it. seemed to keep the flies away. Certainly came through on their breath!

Sorry no idea where I got it. Quite a while ago. just googled garlic powder. We just put it out neat In troughs hung on gates. My dear husband hates garlic so much we didn't use it again as the smell on their breath made him gag!

The heat must be getting to me but do u literally just dip walking stick in tin and jab at the udder??

Nothing more simpler that I've found to work. A good clart stays for a good while. Depends how quiet the heifer is. Normally run the summer calvers through the race and apply when it gets to be a problem.

Thanks. Im not wanting to crush them with only 3 weeks to go but im gonna buy the thick tar and try the stick trick when their heads are in yolks.

Also gonna try garlic powder and add to feed as recommended above.

Thanks all.
