Garlic doesn't work.

Switch and Spot On do work if you are mindful of what they do - they kill flies. They are not a repellent.

Stockholm Tar is great but needs regular top ups.

If not going to be eating or milking it then Crovect also works well. Not licensed in cattle, but is a true repellant.
 
Lucky we don't suffer with flies, but surely if people want a spray, then a sheep dip mixed up into a knapsack sprayer will do the job, enough would be absorbed in hair/skin around udder to keep flies away, calf would suckle fine, saw Stockholm tar needs regular top ups well surely sheep dip would give a couple of months cover on cows?
