Hi all,

I'm a non English speaker and I'm looking for the exact name of different stages of cattle.
Can anyone tell me if the following is correct and fill the gaps (the ??? is a name that I have no idea).

Females
  • Calf: born animal
  • Weaned: calf that is not with its mother
  • Feeder: calf feed to gain weight
  • ???: weaned calfs kept to become mothers, that are in a herd without a bull.
  • Heifer: females that are in a heard with a bull but have not calved yet
  • Cow: females that have calved at least once.

Male:
  • Calf: born animal
  • Weaned: calf that is not with its mother
  • Feeder: calf feed to gain weight
  • ???: weaned male calfs kept to become bulls, that are in a herd to become adults.
  • Bull: adult male that is with cows and heifers
Thank you very much!

There will be some debate about this as many stages tend to be a bit flexible! In Britain, calves is usually to 6 months.

So: heifer calves, then maiden heifers (not been with bull), bulling heifers (breeding age) in-calf heifers. Then it can get a bit confusing as we (and many others) will still refer to 'the heifers' until the end of their first lactation. 'Replacements' would be a term used for the animals kept to enter the herd for breeding.

Weanlings a general term that could be anywhere from 2-7 months depending when they are weaned (especially in suckling herds).

Bull calf; once castrated, steer/bullock. Some parts of the country stirk is also a castrated male, but others it is a young store animal (for feeding).

Young stores/strong stores are feeding animals of either sex.

Prime or finished animals of either sex are ready for slaughter.
Bull - entire male, some for breeding, but some are just uncastrated males that will be slaughtered without breeding.

Hope that helps, there will be others who disagree and lots of regional twists on this one! (Don't ask about sheep, please....)
