Bednar’s Terraland chisel plough – which is being imported to the UK by Knight Farm Machinery – could help users protect their soils against wind and water erosion.

The machine – which can work up to 65 cms deep - offers a viable alternative to ploughing, and is proving popular with farmers looking to restructure damaged soils, such as those growing a substantial acreage of root crops.

David Main, Knight’s Sales Manager, says that in early field trials in the UK the machine’s rear roller left a well consolidated and levelled surface pitted with small divots:

“The teeth on the roller produced a very clear pattern of divots. Any rain or irrigation water falling on the soil would collect there rather than run across the surface and have time to percolate into the soil.

“These divots would also cause eddying of the wind, which would lift the main air stream off the ground, so reducing the surface windspeed and its ability to lift and carry soil particles.

The Terraland is made from high-strength Alform steel, which offers great durability and strength, enabling it to work in the harshest conditions. Yet the 3m machine needs only 180hp – 200hp to work.

The profile of the cultivating legs has three different operating angles, the first aiding penetration; the second designed to break deep set compaction, and the third completing a thorough soil and trash mixing operation before the rear roller consolidates the soil profile.

The legs are set in two rows with a 40cm gap between them. They are hydraulically protected, so they trip out of work and reset themselves to avoid stones and buried obstacles without disrupting or delaying work.

While Bednar offer a range of options on all elements of the machine, for UK the standard equipment will include 80mm chisel points, although 40mm and carbide/hardfaced versions of both sizes are available.

The UK specification also includes Bednar’s hydraulically adjustable double spiky roller, which provides excellent consolidation and is particularly adept at working in stony conditions, and the company’s side shields, which minimise sideways spread of soil and contribute to its ability to leave a well-levelled finish.

Krone has launched a new app for iPad and iPhone users that allows BiG X forage harvester and BiG Pack square baler operators to log customers’ records and field operation data, such as date, time and location, and to produce a simple, accurate report for more efficient invoicing and record keeping.

The CCI Control Mobile app connects via wifi in the cab to the Krone machine. In the case of the BiG X, fuel usage, area covered, crop yield and moisture, forward speed and tonnes per hour are recorded. For the Big Pack, bale weight, moisture and count is recorded along with total tonnage baled and average bale weight.

This data can be simply emailed from the iPhone/iPad as a PDF document or imported into a farm data management tool, such as the Krone BiG Data Tool, to provide a full in depth report including maps to eliminate any doubt over the completed task.

Great Plains UK Ltd

Stand 1122

upload_2015-5-14_14-29-21.png

The new 4-metre grain only version of the Great Plains Centurion cultivator drill is on display in for the first time in the UK at this year’s Cereals event.

The new drill, the CDA 400, which boasts a new-look 3000-litre hopper design (a 4000-litre hopper is available as an option) is added to a growing Centurion range which also includes a new 3-metre version of the drill, the CDA 300. The two new drills will sit alongside the upgraded 6-metre Centurion CDA 600 model. In addition, grain and fertiliser variants for the UK and Western European markets will be developed later this year in 6-metre, 4-metre and 3-metre widths.

The CDA 400 features two rows of 460mm cultivation discs running ahead of a tyre packer that offers highly consistent consolidation in front of Great Plains’ well proven 00 Series openers.

As an alternative to the conventional notched cultivation discs, the drill can be fitted with the Great Plains’ Turbo Coulter option where the need is for minimal disturbance and/or cutting through and drilling into high volumes of residue. This, for example, makes it ideal for use in cover crop rotations as part of a cultural grass weed control strategy where the cover crop has been sprayed off and minimal soil disturbance is necessary to help prevent the emergence of hitherto non-germinated grass weed seeds. Each Turbo Coulter is in line with the trailing double disc 00 Series opener, creating a mini-seedbed in a 30-50mm strip of soil where the seeds will actually be planted and providing every row with equal conditions.

The 00 Series opener offers a choice of 167mm or 125mm coulter spacings with 36 - 330mm x 4mm offset double disc blades on the 167mm spacing or 48 on the 125mm spacing. Each coulter incorporates a seed flap guiding seed close to the opener bottom to eliminate seed bounce and an easy-to-use T-handle adjuster with 18 depth settings.

Hydraulically adjustable down pressure in the range of 40kg to 160kg ensures the coulters operate at consistent depth in all soil types and that the drill performs well in both plough-based and reduced tillage systems. When equipped with the new Turbo Coulter option the new Centurion CDA 400 and CDA 300 drills can also operate very effectively in no till conditions where the soil structure allows.

The seed distribution system is variable rate ready and comprises injection-moulded seed distribution heads with optional built-in tramline shut-offs and seed blockage monitors to accurately deliver seed to each coulter.

The new drill folds to 3m for transport, with the transport weight being carried on the packer, which is fitted with 420/55 17 tyres. A full European lighting kit is fitted.

Hopper weigh cells can be fitted as an option. Working via the hydraulic control system, these ensure the hopper’s weight is evenly distributed right across the drill’s width no matter how much grain it contains. Other options include press wheel scrapers and harrows, bout markers, pre-emergence markers and air or hydraulic brakes.

Control is via a Mueller ISOBUS-ready system and a choice of display terminals is available.

Both the CDA 400 and the CDA 300 will be commercially available in limited numbers from autumn of this year. Prices will be announced in June at the Cereals event.

Gleadell offers key cropping and marketing advice at Cereals – plus Campus seed competition

Choosing the right varieties and marketing them well are two of the most important factors underpinning arable incomes, particularly when prices are under extreme pressure.

Gleadell Agriculture is well placed to offer advice in both areas, and is looking forward to a busy time at Cereals helping growers to maximise cropping potential in the coming season.

Gleadell specialists will be available to discuss the company’s extensive range of cereal, oilseed, pulse and root seeds, as well as forage crops, organic and small seeds.

Its team of traders will also be on hand to discuss the outlook for all combinable crop markets and explain how the company’s diverse range of risk management options can help protect profits.

Gleadell managing director David Sheppard says: “Given where commodity prices are at present we are expecting to be very busy at Cereals, offering valuable advice to help farmer customers old and new make the optimum cropping options to suit their business and maximise their gross margin potential.

“In addition, we can help them put together a marketing strategy to help minimise risk and secure any upside the market may offer in the coming months.”

The seed business is based on close links with top seed breeders, giving Gleadell customers access to the best varieties, often linked to specific end users at a guaranteed premium.

Gleadell trades in all the main agricultural commodity markets, both within the UK and further afield, supplying food, feed and fuel markets. The company recently exported the largest shipment of feed wheat ever to leave the UK, when 66,000t departed Immingham for Thailand in early May.

Gleadell offers expert market advice, secure buyback contracts and proven pool marketing services. The latest January-March wheat pool returned an excellent base price of £130/t ex farm after commission and strong milling premiums, including £40/t for Group 1 varieties. Cost-effective storage and conditioning services are also available.

Gleadell is also one of the UK’s largest fertiliser suppliers, offering an extensive fertiliser portfolio, including GrowHow Blue Bag products, imported urea and P and K fertilisers.

CAMPUS seed competition

As well as obtaining valuable advice, visitors to Gleadell’s stand have the chance to win three one-hectare bags of Campus seed.

Campus, from KWS, is one of the highest-yielding conventional oilseed rape varieties available and was fully recommended in the 2015/16 North and East/West Recommended Lists, underlining the variety’s potential across a range of sites and conditions. A key attribute is its rapid autumn establishment, which has led to Campus being dubbed “the seed with speed”.

The competition is open to existing and new account holders. All visitors have to do is put their name and contact details on an entry card, available at various points around the stand and from farm traders. The winner will be contacted as soon as the draw takes place.

Gleadell Agriculture is exhibiting on stand 901 at Cereals 2015, which takes place at Boothby Graffoe, Lincolnshire on Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th June. Campus – The Seed with Speed

Getting serious about sulphur with Brimstone 90 at Cereals

Stand 301

Farmers who are serious about sulphur should check out Brimstone 90 on JS Tech’s stand. Although well proven in the UK and worldwide , this will be the product’s first appearance at Cereals.
HGCA Sulphur with & without lo-res.jpg

Sulphur deficiency is getting more and more widespread according to the HGCA, with negative effects on yield, nitrogen utilisation and crop quality.

“Brimstone 90 is the state of the art in sulphur fertilisers,” claims Simon Stell of JS Tech. “Sulphate fertilisers leach out quickly, but Brimstone 90 releases continually usable sulphate throughout the crop cycle. It also builds up the sulphur in the soil for the following crop. Dust-free and with great spreading characteristics over a wide range of spreaders, it also disperses in the soil much more efficiently than its competitors, providing an even distribution of sulphate in the crop.”

JS Tech will also be showing, for the first time in the UK, a new range of innovative bio-stimulants. These include Bombardier, a novel humic based bio-stimulant that improves fertiliser utilisation, Mycogel, a unique patented mycorrhizae root enhancer in liquid form, and Rhyzo, a new type of root enhancing additive and bio-nutrient.

If you fancy trying two of the most highly rated varieties to be added to the 2015 HGCA Recommended List then visit the Openfield stand this Cereals for a chance to win some free seed.

Over the course of the two day event visitors will be able to register their interest in a prize draw to be drawn the following week. Up for grabs are five tonnes of new Group 1 variety KWS Trinity and 12 bags of Popular, the highest gross output Double Low variety for the East/West region on the Recommended List.

“One lucky grower will receive 5t of fully-approved Group 1 variety KWS Trinity while three winners will share 12 bags of Popular,” says Openfield national seeds manager Lee Bennett.

“There are no catches and no questions to answer. Growers just need to put the name, address and contact details on an entry card and we will contact them once the draw has taken place.”

For growers looking to broaden their market options or simply gain access to a new variety with better yield potential this offe3r should appeal, says Lee Bennett.

“The 5t of KWS Trinity is enough to drill about 13ha depending on conditions and timings. For anyone wanting to try a new Group 1 alongside one of the more recently added varieties, or looking for a replacement to one of the more outclassed types in this group, this is an ideal opportunity.

“Similarly, with the world awash with coarse grains moving up to a high-yielding milling variety from a feed variety will expand market opportunities and raise the prospect of a market premium,” he says.

For similar reasons he expects growers to express a similar level of interest in the oilseed rape prize.

“The 12 bags of Popular will be shared three ways – 6, 4 and 2 – so there should be plenty for an on-farm trial between tramlines. With a gross output of 107% of controls and excellent light leaf spot and stem canker resistance we expect this variety to truly live up to its name,” he adds.

With the importance of producing top yields to counteract volatile grain prices, plots of high-yielding varieties will be key attractions on the Syngenta stand at this year’s Cereals Event (10-11 June, Boothby Graffoe, Lincs) – including new top-yielding winter feed wheat Reflection, new winter oilseed rape SY Harnas, and high-yielding Hyvido® hybrid winter feed barley.

An exciting new SDHI-based cereal seed treatment that is undergoing development will also be on the stand, as well as black-grass plots for cost-effectively boosting herbicide performance.

Key focus on Reflection

Making its first appearance at Cereals since taking the top slot for UK treated yield on the latest HGCA Recommended List, new hard Group 4 winter feed wheat variety Reflection will form a key focus on the Syngenta stand.

By combining high yield with other attributes – such as early maturity and stiff straw, high specific weight and resistance to orange wheat blossom midge – Reflection offers growers a highly practical choice for planting this autumn, says Syngenta.

Also on the stand will be an opportunity to register for Syngenta’s new ‘Beat Your Best’ yield challenge – a chance for growers to try to beat their previous best average winter wheat yield by growing Reflection next season and sharing insights with others.

Hybrid barley versus conventional barley and second wheat

With hybrid barley shown to repeatedly out-yield conventional winter barley in farm situations, Hyvido®hybrid barley will also feature prominently on the stand.

As well as offering extra income potential to winter barley growers, benefits arising from its earliness and vigour – such as opportunities for earlier winter oilseed rape planting, and its ability to suppress black-grass – mean Hyvido is also now being seen as an alternative to second wheat, says Syngenta. So as well as plots comparing it with conventional barley, plots will also examine its role against winter wheat.

Additionally, the strong Syngenta pipeline of new hybrids will also be discussed – starting with new HGCA candidates Hyvido® Bazooka and Hyvido® Belfry.

Driving OSR yields

Syngenta strongly continues its initiative to Drive Up Oilseed Rape Yields with its reliable new hybrid variety SY Harnas, which has topped the four-year average yield during trials and now has full HGCA Recommended Listing across the UK. The exceptionally high yielding hybrid variety’s strong autumn vigour has already proven to help growers achieve excellent early establishment, to help counter autumn pest and disease pressure.

This year, the Cereals trial plots will also demonstrate the first use of Toprex applications to manage crop architecture, and enable growers to see for themselves the effects of enhanced light penetration and green leaf photosynthetic activity.

Growers can also take the opportunity to glean the latest agronomy updates from Syngenta specialists on how best to tackle autumn OSR establishment pests and diseases for the coming season.

New SDHI seed treatment

For cereals, a new seed treatment that harnesses new-generation SDHI fungicide technology and which is undergoing UK development will also be demonstrated on the Syngenta stand. This will include displays of its abilities to control key seedling diseases but also to boost rooting power – with the aim of producing better crop establishment, overall healthier plants and extra potential for yield.

Black-grass management – cost-effective results

With concerns about black-grass control using post-emergence herbicide chemistry in winter wheat, herbicide plots on the stand will examine the role of pre-emergence herbicide stacking – and how the inclusion of Defy can be used to cost-effectively achieve a better result.

Spring barley

With the growth in interest in spring barley, there will also be a plot of high-yielding spring malting barley Sanette on the stand, which Syngenta hopes will achieve full Institute of Brewing and Distilling approval for brewing use around the time of the Cereals event.

Photo: Hyvido hybrid barley (foreground) vs wheat

Caption: As well as plots comparing Hyvido with conventional barley on the Syngenta stand at Cereals 2015, they will also examine its role against second wheat
