Challenges , Attacks and visions for the future

I was having a chat with a reporter today who is coming to do a bit of filming in a few weeks..

Amongst other stuff she was interested to hear about dairy farmers in wales ( as it is a wales network tv show) about our views on the challenges, attacks and more positively the solution/ visions for the future.. for our industry.

She was referring to the veganury and the climate change brickbats being flung at us... as the recent attacks..

She was wondering what our biggest challenges might be and how we might deal with them.. like prices, our public image both locally (neighbours) and in the wider area.. political arguements etc..

And visions- or how we see our businesses.. Of course i'm an organic farmer so went off on my particular tack.. !!

So i'd really appreciate if you'd chip in with some thoughts! I want to present a balanced view and don't really want to annoy my fellow dairy farmers!

(assuming anyone watches itv wales...!)

Remind her vegans are 1% of the population, from the noise they make you’d think it was 99%.
Get your facts about why ruminant farming is a NECESSITY for a virtuous food cycle and healthy soils full of OM.
Milk is a SUPERFOOD, packed full of nutrients, minerals and vitamins, that is highly digestible.
UK milk is at the very pinnacle of standards in the World.

What I find really annoying is when the media state Livestock farming is 24% of Global Emissions, it's not , Agriculture is 24% of Global emissions, livestock is a approximately 8% with the ability to sequestered 20% of that figure.
Could you get across to her as a industry we would like the correct figures used.
Oh & if livestock is a 1/3 of Agricultural emissions doesn't that mean the other 2/3 are plant based? :scratchhead:

I'm not sure if it was this site but it does say 24% which is one of the figures the Anti livestock groups use but it doesn't break down the 24% by Agriculture sector
There was a discussion on another thread that there are so many emission figures published that its difficult to know which one to use but this week Edinburgh University was using 24% and Tesco magazine quoted 24% but they attribute it to Livestock when most actually say Livestock is a 1/3 of Agricultural emissions.
I'll see if I can find any better reports for you.

24% is a global fig. from the latest IPCC stats.
Here is a link to the EU emissions which is 9.58% (enteric=ruminant livestock).
The next IPCC report might/should take on board the revised metric which is being developed for methane, which downgrades it as a greenhouse gas because it is a short lived.
@Chips is a carbon guru, as is @holwellcourtfarm https://thefarmingforum.co.uk/index...rming-and-land-use.308532/reply&quote=6739771
Statistics/metrics re water consumption are equally confusing but this image is helpful.

the biggest problem we face, are kneejerk reactions from politicians, to complaints by the well intentioned, but uninformed, electorate. Couple that, with large industries, looking to pass their emissions to someone else, we are the problem !

Up here slurry/nvz carbon so environmental. Antibiotic usage only going to get tighter. Distribution of support payments, doesn’t really affect me but a lot of businesses must really relay on it going by last regional NFU meeting
