Was a chinese farmer on here asking for advice on making a lot of hay?

Anyone got a link to thread or no how to tag him?
He did cross my mind, it would be interesting to hear the experience of someone on the ground there. Saying that I bet they would be wary of putting anything negative about their country online for the world to see.
I know we think we are pretty important in the grand scheme of things but that article shows just how dependant we are on distribution centres and hauliers in this day and age.

Last time I checked, everyone has to eat.
Awful as the situation is for everyone personally affected, if it leads to a shortening of the food supply chain and a recognition that globalization isn't all it is cracked up to be, then much good can come of this for farmers the World over.

Hope so, but in the short term it could be a blood bath for those of us with payments to make, be that rents, mortgages, wages, hp etc if we can’t sell because there’s no body working in the supply chain what happens?

If you read the article from China it says there’s so many containers piled up at the docks full of meat that they don’t have enough power supply to keep them refrigerated. Who pays for containers full of spoiled meat?

I know we often say people have to eat but I wonder just how bad the food situation is in those locked down cities in China.

I hope I’m not seen as trying to create fear. I just want to understand what is happening in China which in theory should be a month or 6 weeks ahead of us in the fallout from the start of this. Also if there is anything we as individual farmers can learn from that situation to prepare us should it get as bad here.

Surely risking flue is better than starving anyway ? They might just eat the family dog though.

For sure, if rapid, fundamental restrictions are imposed then it will be messy. Which would just serve to show how vulnerable our supposed ultra- efficient food chain actually is.

A useful exercise, for the individual farmer and for the industry, would be to pose the question:
If we wish to increase our resilience to a more uncertain future - be it caused by climate change, human pandemic, whatever - what needs to change ?
It may throw up some unfashionable, supposedly out-dated concepts: local abattoirs, regional feed mills, reversal of market share in food retailing......

The trouble out there is the will be harshly treated if they break curfew. That probably wouldn’t happen here seeing as the vast majority have no respect for anything and don’t normally have consequences to fear.
And rightly so. Yet the UK is not that much a bastion of liberal values as we are led to believe.

I was involved in the thread about the man from China making hay on like 20,000 acre but I can’t find the thread as everything keeps coming up with Coronavirus..

It’s only a matter of time before England is riddled
Imagine the potential for virus spread with one person coughing their guts up on an 8am tube train! Tbh if England is riddled Scotland will be too, there’s a fair number of people around Inverness who commute to London, woman at my road end flys down for a weeks work at the bbc, was told the other day about a taxi driver living in local village who flys down for 5 days work in London, he stays in a box room on the outskirts while down there but his family stays up here and goes to school etc.
