Your the one being chippy! I treat them all with respect, right up to the moment they start being stroppy, not paying, don’t like the hay, straw, allocated paddock, bridlepaths, parking space, outdoor school, indoor school, toilets, kitchen area, you name it SOME of them will find fault. The MAJORITY are fine and at least a third of them would be classed as friends.

Calm down chap.

Oh really. I started the blanket statement about All horse keepers did I...

No I did not, and the last time I looked, I am entitled to defend myself against unjust and ill informed generalised digs...

Maybe it is some of the attitudes that makes people the way they are towrds them and maybe people should reflect on that before attacking someone for defending themself against ill informed generalised statements that are not true for everyone.

I pay my way, I pay up front if required - on trust when required, and I always treat people I meet with respect. I do also pay more than what was required if something was done outside if n
normal hours etc...
Not something that is echoed by quite a few on here I would guess...

Anyhow, no point continuing debating with people so buried in ill feeling towards others, as it is futile.

Enjoy your evening!!

Mine isn’t an ill informed generalised dig though is it?? Been there, got two t shirts and now know first hand how to treat and deal with livery customers, all are made welcome (we are very very choosy who comes on the yard and have a long waiting list)

How come your so chippy about the subject?

UKjay has hit the nail on the head in this thread. Far from being "chippy" this is a fair - and good tempered defence of those of us who keep horses. Compare to this rather snide,self-righteous quote:

The only “hand been cut off that feeds you” is the one of farmers and feed suppliers not being paid or taken for fools mugs and expected to give credit. At a guess many if not all who sell the odd bales don’t need to sell to the into equine sector. Especially this year with prices high for stock feed. Most of us make our living and money else where, so selling to equines is a little bonus but not essential. They would be wise to remember that they need farmers 3 times a day themselves and once or twice for their nag. Not so much the other way round as it’s a few years since I and others last wanted my dose of horse which Tesco and Findus kindly obliged.

Do we need farmers? I thought the biggest crisis the industry was facing was that we can import food so easily and cheaply. Meanwhile we pay heavily for the privilege of propping up the small guys by the annual dole (though inevitably destroying them in the process) and dishing out the equivalent of several times a good living wage to those rich enough not to actually need it.

Certainly there are farmers out there I am proud to know and happy to buy from, but as a member of the public and a smallholder, paying my own way - shakily at times - from limited means on a small acreage, I really object to the attitude which demands respect from the public for, actually, rather privileged, wealthy people.

And of course there's no need to supply horse owners if ypou don't want to - so why do it? Probably because anything sold to the horse industry tends to be priced up, sometimes to twice the tab on stuff sold farm to farm.

There's something really sickening, to be honest, about someone slagging their clients - and, as Ukjay pointed out - the rest of us who keep / have kept horses - in this way whilst, I suspect, continuing to skin them.

If you don't like the industry, back off, sell up - get a job in a factory or office and learn how the other folk live. We'll survive without you.

Funny thing, I keep horses (but only a dozen) and have never felt I was being slagged off on this forum. On the contrary, I've had a lot of very good advice given freely and without belittlement when my question has been naive. Some here have gone way beyond normal patience to advise me and I am very grateful for it.

One post from a while back did stick in my mind and I think it shows up the attitude of some horsey people. It was a horse owner whining how he had been sold some bad hay (by a farmer, of course). No, sonny, you weren't sold bad hay, you bought bad hay because you were probably too arrogant and too bloody stupid to learn from your mistakes. We all make bad decisions, but most of us try to learn from it and not blame others.

Actually, I believe I have handled myself quite well considering I am an individual in a debate which is biased heavily towards one side owing to the demographic of the forum.
So taking your dig on the chin here, it could be taken that you appear therefore to be unacustomed to accepting adult debate, and thus looks that you can only accept your own views and opinions - regardless of how the generalised negative comments and digs affects others.

Shame really...

Erm, not that I feel certain individuals actually give a damn how things come across, but maybe I get cheesed off because it bugs me in a similar vein to how a lot on here feel about how they appear to be treated by certain sectors.

Read this forum openly and in full, you will soon see a myriad of threads, posts, comments etc about how it affects individuals after they work all hours etc and get shafted by the supermarkets, people not understanding where food comes from - or understands how much it costs etc, etc - then you may start to comprehend that people like myself, whom pay in full, up front, in advance - often over the local prices if I find a good source of anything, treat people that I deal with in a respectful manner - may just be as annoyed and pee'd off over these ill presented digs.

We are not all idiots, we are not all similar in our views towards the industry of the forum - some of us actually give a damn, and want to learn and support where possible, but to be fair, I am conscious that this industry is so insular for some reason beyond me.

And so have I received great support, and I too, am extremely grateful for the support and knowledge shared with me by some on here. This debate has nothing to do with that though...

No, sonny, you weren't sold bad hay, you bought bad hay because you were probably too arrogant and too bloody stupid to learn from your mistakes.

It takes time to learn that, and unfortunately - some farmers will not allow you the time to check the hay etc - as they feel you are questioning their product, so you have an unbalanced spin on things there, and a personal dig at someone who may be learning imho.

We all make bad decisions, but most of us try to learn from it and not blame others.

So why continue to sell to people who put you into a position that creates negativity. You see, it really is as simple as not supplying them - no lost payment, no request for credit....obviously have not learnt from the mistakes..
