@Flat 10 - is a Dutch harrow sort of like a modern zig zag harrow mounted on a frame, and usually with a crumbler on the back? Lots of spikes pointing straight down, sort of thing? That might do the job.

The problem I have with that field is it is very heavy clay. I appreciate some would say it shouldn't be cultivated at all in that case, but I've only got the land I have got, and I can't change the system for just one field very easily.

Both the tractor and I get very hot when we go into that field with the PH, so anything that makes the job easier seems worth exploring.

Yes. But PH is better. Disc harrows might help too? To be that slow with PH you are probably doing too much with it? Twice shallowly might be better? With a roll in between? I would roll what you cultivated before you go in with PH. All very easy for me to say from distance.

I must say, that power harrows are a godsend in places, but I have bitter experience of making a porridge of some land when it rained hard afterwards. On the other hand, slugs love clods...can't win! I reckon a good shallowish triple k with a heavy crumbler behind is the trick, and don't hold back on the speed!

Tip... In case you dont know, if you are not happy with the results alter the clod board, it does more to alter it than anything.

Yes, it will take more power though, but essentially if its for cereals you only really need to be 2" into the ground, without a low clod board it wont do much. So set your working depth with the roller and wind the board down until you get the right "fineness" but no more.

In really concrete type clay it can be better to do it twice fast rather than once very slow but this is a very rare situation.

Thanks @Lincsman - that makes sense to me. Just out of interest, the 3050 is roughly 90hp, and the PH is a 2 metre wide Maschio. The JD is fine for everything else I want it for, but it seems to really hate that PH. It's set up so-as to do enough of a job now (i.e. about 2 inches as you say above), but any more and it really struggles. Is that about right for the amount of power available? Or would I be better getting a wider PH but going more slowly? Not that I race round with it at the moment - I go along in low second mostly.

Think you will find its 3m! Power harrowing is hard work but you are doing all the work in one pass. I have seen 4m kill 250Hp put in deep enough!

Hypothetically speaking, which would be the best buy as a classic tractor? The 390T, 80 90 Fiat, or i think its a 100 90 Fiat?
