Claydon hybrid A Shares

The standard point for the claydon hybrid is the 7" A Share. I'm often thinking it should be the 5", possibly even the 4" as a standard setup.
Easier to pull and less soil disturbance seem sensible to me? I don't buy the argument for competition... Any thoughts?

Yes and no. I personally think competition is important on the area you’re disturbing. Min till scenario where you’re disturbing the whole lot; narrow/thick rows needed. I’m dd with metcalfe (11mm) on 250 centres and finding less rubbish growing between rows and because there’s so much seed IN the row there’s nothing there either.

That’s my point… with the wide shares (wide band) there aren’t any more seeds being placed so you’re disturbing more soil with slightly less competition than the smaller shares which are moving less soil and “tightening the band”.
These are all 250 centres.

In theory worn out shares are 5". Do you notice any difference in those fields?
I haven't thought to look!

I thought the Claydon was 315mm centres? My hybrid has 19 tines in 6 metres.

I’ve tried the 2.5 inch points with the front cutting disc into cover .I’ve used the Spaldings 7 inch I liked them got a good spread of seed and I’m going to try the 5inch ones next autumn. I’ve also drilled some spring barley on the 1inch point. think the lack of rain is the problem. Not the spacing.
