Cleaning up a fergie

So the Fergie runs ok but starting can be an issue, needs a squirt of easy start before firing up. Is this going to forever be the case or is there something obvious that’s not quite as it should be?

Heater plug work fine, and has kissgas in the tank too which flows through. Will check air filter out.

How long would the heater plug need to be held in for?

From dim and distant memory, thirty secs at least, before operating ki gas, then crank engine with one cyl having compression till it gets away, then bring in the other three. Our new diesel was a three man job to start in the winter from new, and didnt get any better! Two men on the handle, one on the starter, every morning!

People would pay good money to see that now ...........
You must of had a bespoke handle if two lads could swing form it, unless they got on well?

Bespoke bit of pipe jammed on handle! Thing was used to take milk churns to the stand at the end of the drive, so daily job.

The milk stand built up to be level with the lorry body, that brings me back.
Probably could have rolled them down to the end of the drive quicker.
We learned the hard way (4 cylinder 35) no matter how bad it is running, if it starts relatively easy you have a chance to get a bit done without hassle.

Our stand did two jobs, first the milk went onto the lorry, then five churns of fresh water was put on the stand. We had no mains water, and were not allowed to use our well water( dont give any unboiled to visitors, we were instructed) for washing up in the dairy. Cows could drink as much pond water as they like though.
Oh I believe the stand was an old Morrison shelter.

They are very good starters IF you have decent compression, I can start all ours even if it is down to -5C without heat or Ki-Gas, but these have all been rebuilt, new rings/liners/pistons and valve seats. They can be quite fussy with the spill timing and ideally they need to be cock on to get the best from them. They are not a hard engine to do but they are certainly different with the crank coming out the side of the block and rods/pistons go in from underneath as opposed to the top!
I wouldn't be using easy start if I could help it.
The excess fuel button will only stay engaged if the stop button is pressed in, if it is latched out it won't stay in.
