Clutching at straws

Took my Disco into the garage with a dodgy clutch (job engaging gears when hot). After a week they said they had inspected the clutch which was very worn, needed replacing but they didn't have a hoist to do the job. Apart from the clutch pedal position is there any way to inspect the clutch facing without removing the bell housing ? Fibre optic camera up the drain hole ?

I'd just bleed fresh fluid into it and see if it helps first

Start it up, put it in top gear, plenty of revs and let your foot right off the clutch.

If it stalls immediately, the clutch plate is fine, if it slips, then stops, then it's sxxgged :)

I should warn, there are some risks when carrying out this highly technical analytic test, like ripping the center out the clutch plate, however, that is just my disclaimer.......

The clutch was not slipping and being a td5 stalls if I forget to give it the beans, putting my foot down hard up a steep road I was getting wheelspin until the TC kicked in. I could change up easily but trying to change down the gearbox felt woolly, needed to jiggle the clutch a bit to get into first gear.

It's starting to sound like a g/box issue, not the clutch.

Can't find any record of being charged for gearbox oil in the last 10 years/50,00 miles, he said clutching at straws again. Used to change it every 24,000 miles when I did my own servicing.

As garage said they couldn't do the job the car was sent to another garage for a "few days". Now this is Shropshire, where an MOT can take a day if not longer, so I didn't hold my breath. Rang first garage, where's my car, dude ? They first said they didn't know, but then found it. Has the work been done ? Nobody knows, can I ring next week when the boss is back ? :banghead::banghead:

What model discovery is this on?

I gather that from about MK3 onwards they were designed for the body to be lifted up from the chassis for access. The local LR garage had to buy a new two post lift with bridge over the vehicle for working on them.

Yes- disco 3 & 4 is a body off job for :

- clutch replacement. Dont buy a d3 manual.
- turbo (s) or exhaust manifold work.
- egr coolers.
- crank sensor.
- heads or head gasket issues.

We have two and they don't go into gear well if you don't keep the gearbox oil changed....it's special synthetic oil and quite expensive, called mtf. but only two or three litres required.transfer box is gear oil and prob wants done too in my opinion.worth a try.

Was the clutch dragging at all? That’s what they usually do. Did you try to engage a gear at standstill when hot? If it creeped forward or just inched forward a bit as you select the gear then it’s dragging. Can be the DMF playing up aswell

Close family has an independent garage and he said once they got to know what they were doing with the body off stuff with LR/RR it wasn't so daunting anymore. The first one is the worst, then it becomes just a case of 'popping the body off' and they took on a few jobs which other garages wrote off as cost write-offs or just didn't want to do.
