Collie Looking for Work - Oldham

One year old collie looking for a job...something to keep him stimulated. He is a very clever boy who needs to get out and do something with himself. He lives in Shaw but I can bring him to Oldham and surrounding areas such as Kirklees etc.

Perhaps I created the post in the wrong thread. But basically he is an active working dog who is available to work on a farm if anyone needs him around in the local area - that was the purpose of the post. I had seen some people on here asking if anyone has a collie available and therefore, I posted to state a collie is available for work.

I think unless you are aware of the full story, accusations regarding research of breeds and care of the animal is totally unwarranted - my post is literally an offer of help for anyone who needs.

I think people are asking is he trained with livestock. If he’s not he won’t be any use to anyone. Nobody is going to train the dog for you. It takes a lot of time and effort. At one year old he is the right age to start training not to start work.

edit. Collies in general only work well for one person that they’ve built a bond and understanding with. Your post is too vague. Are you offering yourself and the dog or just drop off the dog which would be very unfair on a year old.

I’m sorry, but posting on here that you have a dog, that happens to be a working breed, but is bored and probably untrained, does anyone want to borrow it for an hour or two, is a bit like saying you have a pony does anyone want to ride it in the Grand National next year.

So you are looking for some livestock your dog can worry without breaking the law? The moral of that story, is don't get a pup off working lines if you just want a pet. Always do your research. Sadly, the rescues are full. Unfortunate indeed.
some pretty nasty assumptions there old man .
sounds like your cv if you have one would need to have im a miserable old git on it to be accurate and true.

Perhaps the OP would like to tell us the whole story, then we can judge for ourselves? So far, we know he is 12 months old, wants stimulation, is very clever, and "wants to do something for himself". The owners is not prepared to tell us any more. Do you really need it any plainer?

.... I get what the OP is saying , I think they have missed the point though !
@Fendt516profi has made a valid point .....he just ain't gonna go and work straightaway for another person , and at 12mths old .....how trained is he ?

I have a young dog here that just needs work work work but atm I haven't got it for him but come Sept he will get plenty to do , I'm fortunate that he will work for others and a friend borrows him when he needs to move sheep about and it works well but he always comes back here to be fed in his own kennel/ run at night . We still have 15 tup hoggs here that have not returned from winter tack so I give him a run around them most days to keep him interested and sharp .

.....there are plenty of ' collie dogs' around that 'need something to keep them stimulated' ......they are unwanted pets from the Covid period and are not useful working sheep dogs ......they could have been but they just aren't!!

Just a question for @JacquiRuben If someone was to take the dog on ...What gaurantee would you give that he won't cause worry to sheep ?

....or that he has ever worked with sheep ?

I see you recently joint TFF .....

The OP is clearly someone who feels that the dog ought to work because it is a sheep dog, by breed. She has at least ventured onto a farming forum and asked. Most won't ask. It's a sheep dog. That's what it says on the label. So, find a field of sheep and let's see what it can do! I am serious and the traditional way to wake people up is by shouts and shaking. I make no apologies for being "nasty". Sheep worrying is a nasty business.

On Radio 4 this morning I heard that the south-west has the greatest concentration of livestock worrying in the UK. I am never my best at that time of the day but I think the interviewer was at the Cornish Show (?) and nearly every farmer she interviewed had some experience of livestock worrying. The police in that part of the country have apparently introduced DNA testing of dogs where there is livestock worrying. Not before time! Perhaps the English law ought to follow Scotland and introduce a £40,000 fine and 6 months in prison?

I am a dog owner. Over the last 40 years, I have probably had an average of 30 of my own dogs in the kennel and sometimes as many as 50. Many of these dogs were trained on local grouse moors where sheep graze. I am surrounded by sheep farming on all sides. I currently have 40 sheep on my own land and my three German shepherds are exercised loose, with out collar or lead, on this same land every day. Yet my neighbour (1,000 acres +) called in the other day and I asked him if he had ever had any trouble from my dogs. He said, "No. Because they are trained". It really isn't rocket science and I get fed up being labelled with these morons who can't/won't train their dogs. It's about time we got the message out there.

it says good natured and been taught basic commands

so if that's true the dog was well bred and has had a bit of training.

but those here on this forum / thread have decided its a worrier and killer. hmm.

Very poor form here from some members. Just jumped down the ops throat for no reason. The dog might be dead handy. I had a pup that would pen sheep up at 6 months before and by 12 months it’s was a hell of a dog
That would be a rare dog, I had one at 5 month old I moved 200 sheep with. But I doubt the op dog will have had much chance to learn anything as if it had they wouldn't be looking for something for it to do now
