Having calved the first 20 cows to a new bull 3 have been the wrong way round. I cannot remember the last time we had one the wrong way round let alone 3.
2 have had to be out via ceaser as they were too large to jack out and I’ve just calved another the wrong way round tonight but the calf was...
Desperately looking for a Dorset Down ram to put to our Soay's for this years breeding season. Seems like the most ideal fit to increase carcass size and growth rate, while not compromising on the ewes safety during lambing or some of the good qualities associated in the breed.
Only issue being...
Hi Just wondering what people’s thoughts on Cheviot mules, quite a lot of people seem to be getting them now and iv got the chance of a batch of shearlings, currently on NoE mules, will the cheviots be as good lambing? Similar milk ? And as good mothers not had anything to do with them? Any...
Just been to ring a lamb that was passed over first time as his testicles were tiny and tight to his body.
He's around a three weeks old now, so assuming his balls would now be in the sack, I caught him to find they are no better than the first time, still tight to his body, and way to tight to...
I ve had lots of triplets and quads of my second crop mules. It goes against my intuation but would I be OK leaving them with the ewe?.Plan would be to give the ewes plenty of corn and get the lambs on to creep ASAP.
So I have been holding off starting this thread but as we are almost a month away now thought I would start it off.
I did my first season last year and cannot wait to get back at it this year, been working on stengthing my back and core a lot through the off season. My main target this time is...
Has anyone bred these, or bred from them? I’ve been wondering for a few years what like they’d be as a commercial ewe, a shetland mule if you like. I’ve seen examples of this breeding go through the live ring but I’ve not seen them used for breeding or in the cull ring post breeding. I know...
Numnuts castration is now licensed to use in Scotland, looking forward to using it here this year.
Numnuts.co.uk
I know it won't suit some folk but for us ringing at a month old as well as nemo drench, tag, troy jag whilst in the tailing chute works really well
Hi All,
I am picking up some shearing jobs of my own this year.
So far only been small pet flocks but getting a fair few. Just wondering who everyone uses for insurance when shearing.
We are looking at buying a farm steading and part of our business plan includes constructing a new shed and converting an existing shed looking for advice on things to consider and a sounding board on whether our plans sound reasonable.
Converting existing earth floor shed to slatted sheep...
Even after 7 or 8yrs, I still consider myself as a newcomer to sheep rearing.
As my own lambing comes near an end and my mind starts to function somewhat nearer to usual, I'm wondering what others consider an acceptable or even inevitable level of lamb mortality at time of lambing itself and...
Iv a few ewe lambs that’s lambed about a week ago. 1 was lambed by vet and checked all inside and no damage done. But she’s been pressing and pushing a slight prolapse out since. Now tonight in final check another 1 lambed about a week has full prolapse out and seems to have slight tear in it...
So I lambed inside this year a small amount and once lambs were a few days to a week old I've put them in the same field as 1 ram. So far he has completely ignored them and everything has been fine. Just wanted to know other people's thoughts/ experiences. Thanks
I’ve a number of last years ewe lambs running , the plan was to sell half as shearling breeding ewes as they are decent sorts.
But the price of hogs at the moment means they need to be £250 plus as shearlings……

If the wet weather we have experienced for the last nine months was to be the "normal" I think I would have to pack in.
It's just too miserable and hard work!
Hopefully it's a one off season.
I’ve started lambing some been great others not so much (usual lambing ) but I’ve had a few of what I would say premature early type lambs that are alive . Some require heat lamp others not but there so fine. After a few days some have died just seems there guts can’t take it . Also getting some...
I lamb outside and am considering 8 week weights and weaning weights to aid identifying poor performers.
I'm not planning on tagging or weighing at birth and so I'm wondering if I just take 8 week and weaning weights I'll have enough info for identifying poor performers? I'll tag at 8 weeks...
