Ok.... that makes more sense... I haven't picked it up yet so haven't had a proper look round....

Are the hydraulics generally quite slow... seems to take an age to lift and tip...

Also is the gear pattern a bit random? Seems to go, 3rd-1st - 2nd-4th... is that right ??

Cheers,

No, sounds like pump may be needing changed. Gearshift should be straightforward - Ford 655 transmission.

I'm picking it up on Friday so will have a good go over it...

It's slow to lift but drops pretty much at free fall.... should they have check valves ??

Quite excited about picking it up... have wanted one for ages...

Not sure about check valves, but ours was slow on hydraulics even after a filter and oil change, even had a replacement pump lined up but in a last attempt to not spend money I opened up the tank and the problem was the mesh full of sh!t thankfully

Got a picture
It was a bit dark when I got back.... then I got it stuck half on, half off the trailer as the angle was too steep and I lost drive !!! o_O

Will post some good pics over the weekend..

In the floor of the cab are two fill points... one presumably the torque, and the other the gearbox level??

Any idea which is which ?? (y)

As an ex-employee, I can tell you that IH skid units were used in early machines but from the 440 onwards they were based on a ford skid unit. The later ones and the 404 models used a 655 skid unit. The hyraulics were a separate system, pump crankshaft driven with a reservoir tank under the one side wing panel
Hi mine is a green 404. I only have two speeds, should it be a 4 speed it feels like there should be a lower speed. Do you know of anywhere or anyone to get a manual for it as well. Just so I know wher, what and how fluids to put in. thanks

404 was the final version with a rounded front to the cab frame - replaced the green/black 440-2 version. A few sold in the Benson red that was introduced just before Bensons folded - otyhers in Yellow after sell off to Matbro. 440, 440-2 and 404 all had self levelling via compensation rams fitted at the rear of the booms.
