I’ve sort of given up on FW, because most of what I see in it is so depressing. But I do like @Guy Smith ‘s and @Charlie Flindt ‘s articles and reading the Farmer Focus articles.
For more accurate yields, I’d choose TFF.
Not surprisingly, most of us seem to get about the same yields in the same parts of the country that we farm.

I haven’t got a good “pub yields” story, more of a “grain store yields” story.
Back in the 70s and 80s, because we had a dresser in our grain store, our neighbour would get us to dress his beans, to take out the fat hen for him.
Every year he would ask us what our wheat yields were and no matter what we said, his was always a cwt/acre more.
So in1984 ( a very good year) he asked us as usual and my father replied 77cwt/acre. Of course the neighbour said his did 78.
“Ah” my father said,”I lied. Ours did 79 this year.”
We didn’t dress his beans ever again from that year on!

First rule of pub-yields - never declare first.

I suspect we are all prone to pub-yield syndrome and as long as we all enjoy the game it’s not worth getting up-right about.

It’s a bit like having to declare the size of your manhood - you are not going to get your neighbour to check your measurements.(Unless your neighbour is one of those farmers featured on the Phwoar! thread.)

Thanks for the kind remarks about my FW column - most appreciated. By chance my column next week is all about the new pub-yield syndrome - Twitter Yield syndrome.

Wishing everyone a good harvest.

I wouldn't use FW as a source of accurate yields :D

@Guy Smith @Two Tone - you two had a great guide to "pub yields" Would you mind posting it in here so we can all calibrate what we see in the media? :D

As said my ten rule guide to Pub/Twitter/Instagram Yield syndrome will be in next weeks FW. I’ll put it on here once the hard copy is out - but I’ll bet you lot could probably second guess or improve it by then.

actually I think last year we saw a new phenomena - "inverse pub yield boasting" I recall several threads where many seemed to compete to claim t have been the worst grain fill drought affected

This year I predict a lot of TFF / Twitter boasting about who has the lowest CSFB affected OSR yield

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
