Hmm wheat yields 50% more than malting barley on my farm.I don’t know if it’s wise for me to grow much malting barley if it’s only going to attract a 12% premium.

Rejigged my plans the other way.
Was planning to spread dung on wheat stubble after peas and grow a second wheat but will be gong into spring barley next year instead.

Only manage 35% more yield than Spring barley here. If able to grow all first wheats then yes, WW would give a higher margin.

Some, including myself, are now selling. This will take the steam out.

It will probably fall faster than it has risen, and UK prices are way above other regions around the world I'm told.

At these levels it can’t be wrong! I’ve sold harvest barley at a higher level that the 3 year wheat average for the farm.

Probably should have been braver and stuck 2t/ac down!

Lots of farmers on Twitter telling all the world they are baling straw for the first time in x years to help out the livestock guys.

What they are neglecting to say is what they are charging them for such generosity!

My local livestock farmer is having what ever he needs first at the same price as usual (maybe I’m a sucker) but he’s very good at shifting it when conditions suits and a decent chap.

Power station man is paying for it

My local chap is having 90 acres for nowt, I do get some muck back mind, the rest went to auction, if it wasn't needed so badly it would have been chopped, it made between 30 and 70 an acre!!

I've just spotted one getting a fair bit of stick for bigging his own generosity up!!

Surely if you're locking in now at that price then you're also saying/thinking that this current rally this season has peaked or near to it. Still think it has a way to go yet and thus in turn will drag up Nov19 prices further??
I'm not convinced, just sold a little bit as cover, I remember well what happened last time it hit £200 people holding, expecting £250. The market just looked elsewhere.

Not sure I get this idea that straw sales should be charitable

I’m mean why don’t we just give our wheat to cash strapped chicken and dairy farmers as well !

Seriously do people genuinely believe combinable crop farmers make so much dosh they can afford to just give their produce away ?
