Educate me.

What is milling wheat making at the moment? And what would lower protein skyfall be making? I'd say haulage is at least another £10 ton for me. Every time I have tried for milling in the past always find it loses its appeal from haulage
If its another £10t haulage and low potein then stick with the £187t feed price.
Why do you grow Skyfall then, only option this year?

depends on the grade - E wheat (high protein) is plus £40 this year, ours made 16% protein on 120kgs N ! ........... but only because yield was rubbish !

A Red spring wheat?.. I had some many years ago for Hovis "british" bread.

no its a regular wheat - it’s a very high proton variety called Montana, very similar growth, yield and agronomy to Soltice - have grown it a few years and has alway been a decent return, in the first couple if years the premium was £45b/t - its £35-40 now and maybe less next year, as usual job gets over done !

Because I find it yields just as well as anything in a good year and on some of my light soils I think it suits it. I tried some Graham this year and it got full of yellow rust and a poor yield. I find skyfall pretty tough

My agronomist was saying how bad Skyfall was this year for yellow rust? Our Crusoe was no problem.
If a variety suits your ground and climate then stick with it.

If it’s full spec, even with extra haulage taken into account (circa £17/t) you would be a £10 premium over your feed price. If it’s sub 12.4% protein you would be best off as feed.

either way it’s good money where it is 👍

I have given up growing Skyfall this year, which is a shame as has always done pretty well. But concerned it is breaking down with rust and has often looked like it will shed, so just a gut feeling decision which isn't very scientific.
