Fallow has costs associated with it as well though, we need a certain amount of labour to run the root cropping enterprises, cereals act as 1) a break for roots, 2) a way of keeping on top of weeds that are harder to control in non cereals, 3) a supply of straw for the carrot enterprise. But I can see some going to 50/50 fallow, use clover in the fallow bit for some cheaper fertility.

Very much. There is no "low risk" or "zero risk" option sadly.

The things you mention are (more) known costs and therefore the risk is potentially lower. First loss best loss and all that.

none I know of - you need to find a trader or broker you can work with and they will help educate you

it would be very sensible for you to set your feed prices at the point of setting your egg contracts I would think, a feed merchant may do that for you without you needing to get directly involved in futures but that is how they will hedge their position, merchants rarely speculate
Surely that’s just the same as se

surely that the same as selling wheat before you plant it any?
I didn’t fix my feed feed price when I arranged contract as i (wrongly) believed feed was at the top.
Luckily I didn’t sell my wheat before I planted!

£22 rise in a morning is impressive!

Whether it holds anything like that by the end of the day is a whole different story though.
It’s only a £16 gain but still impressive especially on a Friday! Starting to wonder what next week has in store for us? Could we see another £35-40 rise in a week? At £300 it’s getting very tempting to move some more.

I would. Unfortunately it's only £275 down here this afternoon.

When I was buying in feed we used to forward buy for up to a year. Now we mill our own feed so we forward buy things like soya meal, but our own wheat is missing out on a payday, given its being fed to the hens and egg prices haven't yet risen.

So i'm looking to mitigate against that, although given this volatility is almost unprecedented and unlikely to happen again maybe it's best just to take the hit and move on.

indeed and I would never sell wheat before I planted it ........ in fact I would rarely dare sell wheat before I harvested it

and certainly not at the moment that's for sure

Why didn’t you just sell some wheat?
I did sell some, but wanted to take some of the risk out of the unsold wheat growing in the field with these high growing costs attached to it. Market finished £7/t down from where i sold the futures so although that wheat in the field today has lost £7/t of potential value, the futures gain has covered that.
Got hairy at one point but it has actualy finished down on the day

liquidity of UK markets vs other that are larger maybe ?

I think that’s the exact reason, it’s speculator driven, and at times the bid vs offer on ICE has been £40-50 difference, not ideal for an investor wanting to get in and out quickly and at narrow margin.

American market sharply lower, what a rollercoaster.
