Is it worth the premium though? By the time they take extra for treatment handling and haulage ect would just feeding a bit more soya be as economic?
Do all the feed companies do this heat treatment or just a few??
I'm guessing it would be used in their Rolls Royce cakes hopefully not made cheap again by using crap.

An extra £50 per tonne and by just feeding more soya you would probably have too much protein for the cows at grass.

I notice a lot of crude ash in these bought mixes (6-8%). What is that, and what does it do. Or is it just filler?

Ash is not an ingredient. Most energy calculations rely on ignition and the ash is the remains of the ignition.
The idea is that the ash is basically the "non digestible" part. It does contain the minerals so is not entirely undigestible

So it's part of the wheat feed etc. Ie it's not added in separately?

No stopped throwing food about willy nilly 4 years ago. robot and oopf fed to what i choose for each individual animal. They do have free access to regumaize 44 molasses through a lick feeder in the winter. Just grass or round bale down the feed barrier.
How well do lick feeder work when we used to do it the bullys used to get very fat

Because it is urea based it is more likely to have the opposite effect of making them milk more and pull condition off and they don't pig out on it at all. On ad lib a 1.25 ton or 1000litres lasts 60 cows about 3-4 weeks. It's also very noticeable that lower yielding cows tend to take more than fresh calvers that would be on more concentrate. They regulate their requirements themselves and it can be seen in milk urea levels.

Can I suggest getting a experienced nutritionist in. Too much wheat will be dangerous and careful formulation is required. I don't get any problem with blends flowing as long as your sensible with the molasses. Not had any experience with the Daltec auger but been told this week they don't like fine powdery meal and spiral auger is better??
