Conservatives to end long journeys for slaughter livestock

Just read on the BBC website that in addition to other new animal welfare legislation the government are planning to end long journeys for livestock.

They claim that earlier attempts to restrict journey time for live animals had been hindered by EU single market rules.

I think after Brexit we could be seeing farmers being forced to sell stock within a 100 mile radius, which could have devastating financial implications for some farmers.

Will it ? Maybe local markets like Cardigan and Cowbridge will reopen ?
Local produce sold locally with no food miles can only be good IMO.

Where is the demand for cull cattle, ewes and sows around Cowbridge? Currently the majority will be transported hundreds of miles away to be slaughtered, different abattoirs cater for different markets.

I may be cynical, but don't you think we are starting to see some pre election piffle '' we are the party that cares'' (put which ever colour you want before the sentiment) although I agree with the general idea of local food miles, previous governments have systematically destroyed just that, with legislation and hand in glove antics with major food retailers.

Let hope as The labour lot so called policy about effects on climate change ,eat ,shop, buy local etc at The Welsh Assembly when The same Labour lot at The Vale of Glamorgan Council want to close Cowbridge mart site and turn into a money making carpark thus contridicting Welsh Assembly Policy and FORCING farmers to Travel longer and further distances so INCREASING the effects to climate change and Animal Welfare issues ,daft.

I had started a similar thread... where is the bonfire of red tape we are getting after Brexit?? The reality is the EU has not been been creating legislation Whitehall seems as unnessassary, on the contrary, the EU has been holding Whitehall back!! This is the tip of the iceberg bearing down on us!

Did I read somewhere that Boris Johnsons partner is a animal rights activist,if so,would this have any bearing on the decision

My wife has a number of friends all working and living in London. They all claim that Boris is the most liberal and left wing Conservative they have ever met.

Has the Conservative party put any actual details out about this or is it just a headline. Because at the moment it could almost mean anything to anyone. Although increasingly this appears to be the way they want to treat us.

Double thread running on this subject both started by remoaners spreading fear and fake news as usual. Let hope the small local slaughterhouses come back, who wants to transport animals further than they have too

I suppose he had to be to become mayor of London. I also remember him presenting a tv programme a few years ago about how great Turkey was and how we should welcome it into the EU. (His gt grandfather was the last foreign minister of the Ottoman empire, but the Turks executed him when the empire fell.)

Fake news that its bad for farming
Which bit is fake news? Are you saying the conservatives do not have intentions to introduce measures to restrict livestock movements? Are you saying previous attempts to increase the amount of legislation born by our industry where not being blocked by being inside the EU?

Have you taken any land out of production from last autumn?
