Ours are used frequently. Mainly for mitearing fibre cement sheets. Both 5” dewalt on 5 amp batteries
If used for heavy cutting metal yes they do eat the battery but for light use they’re ok

De Walt here too, cheap as chips and reliable. Impact driver pretty good as well, replaces 6 foot of scaffold pole getting wheel nuts undone!

It isn't just the freedom from having to get electricity to where you want to use it, but the freedom from having to worry about getting the damn cord tangled if you want to get on a funny angle. Another vote for the 18v dewalt, ideally with the bigger batteries as they fare better in the long term when not drained too fast. The physically smaller ones with half the number of cells in there although same voltage would be subject to higher strain/heat load if you have a job like a knife bank to sharpen. I usually swap 5ah batteries half way through a knife bank before it starts to slow 3/4 the way through if I didn't swap.

Got an old Makita and a newer brushless Makita, the difference is very noticeable.
Get minimum 5ah 18v and you will never use a corded one again.

Got a Milwaukee here with a pair of 5ah batteries and use it for everything from cutting some tin to cutting broke hedge trimmer flails out on occasion, yea heavy work is sore on the batteries but with 1mm discs its surprising what it will cut

Another one of those things like battery grease gun, hammer ,stiltsons once youve got one you'll wonder how you managed before ,on a serious note they are a handy tool and even better with (correction) quick nut

Don't buy a cheapo. I bought one from lidl to try out, shat her pants within a few hours of use, cuts out when you push it just a little.
Look at the toolrange of a brand before committing.

dewalt 54v grinder is the best, dewalt brushless 18v is 2nd, milwaukee fuel 18v is 3rd best.

What's the best make of really thin cutting discs?

parweld/oxweld discs from oxford welding are good and cheap from ebay, all makes of inox/stainless slitting discs give similar performance though imo. Flexovit, klingspor or 3M probably best but more expensive and not really worth it tbh.

Dewalt 18v grinder I have had it for 10 years now , got it because I had an 18v dewalt drill, also had for 10 years , so only had to buy the grinder body put new brushes in the drill recently .
I also bought a Dewalt impact gun but it unfortunately is not as good as the drill or grinder in fact it was junk , had no power whatsoever and bought a snap on instead .
They all run on the older type batteries and are starting to get a bit weak now .
May have to bite the bullet Eventually and change the lot as the batteries are no longer available.
Would most likely go Milwaukee next time, but it’s hard to fault the Dewalt for the time I have had them .

I have a Bosch one and it's fantastic I don't no how i coped without it before. It's great round the yard, fencing or in the field for cutting wire off a trimmer or changing wearing metal.
