Countryside Stewardship - Historic Environment Options

Not sure where the right home for this thread would be but here goes!
When it came to Countryside Stewardship, many farmers who do have archaeological features on their farm did not choose any heritage options on their Countryside Stewardship application. Defra want to find out why so they can improve these options in the new ELMS.

If this was you, can you share your thoughts in this 10 minute survey? Your views will be anonymous https://adas-survey.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/effectiveness-of-historic-environment-options-within-the-c

The Countryside Stewardship options available for heritage include:
  • HS3: Reduced-depth, non-inversion cultivation on historic and archaeological features;
  • HS4: Scrub control on historic and archaeological features; and
  • HS9: Restricted depth crop establishment to protect archaeology under an arable rotation.
Many thanks!

Have done the survey but will add this;

I was in Higher Tier CS because of having SSSIs (not mentioned in the survey), Scheduled Monuments and SHINE features. I had to have options to manage these as part of the deal. The HS options cost me the most to manage e.g. scrub clearance, yet paid the least!

To be fair, other options did subsidise the poorer ones. HS3 suited our direct drilling very nicely but we didn’t start that just because of stewardship.

Not bothered with survey yet but again all geared around arable, - what about existing features on grassland such as ridge & furrow? Seriously tempted to rip up all our ridge & furrow in a few years time, crop it for a year then plonk it in one of the above schemes 🙄🤔? Cheers dh

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
