What are peoples thoughts about topping either at the time of drilling or earlier either with or without spraying off? - In the absence of grazing, just to be clear.
Topping does make things look tidier, not sure it's necessary pre drilling other than asthetically.
Covers here pre beet this year are half rolled, half topped, to see how the om works in each case. It will be mucked and ploughed, because the drill can't cope with trash.
Pre spring corn we usually spray them off pre drilling, this year trialling some sprayed off post drilling, with a strip topped topped cross over the field just for interest.
Pre spuds we top, muck, cultivate then plough, mostly to get the physical om to fall through the seperators, and in the planted row. This greatly reduces cracking, capping and slumping of the rows, less tuber greening and easier harvesting.
