Can you mix straights @juke? That would be the cheapest way of buying seed.

Yes we can got a shed a bucket ,scales and big dumpy sacks, the trick is remembering all the inclusion rates but yes will be open to straights done it before. Will need extra straights for osr companion crops anyway.. the hardest thing to get hold of was winter peas .

Oakbank are very happy to help in this regard too. We don't have "Standard Mixes" as such as I believe in having a discussion about your objectives and then go from there.
Call me (Ian) on 01480 890686 and I'll do my best to help. We have lots of experience and an active User group of farmers.

We had some winter peas for a short while autumn 2017 couldn't find any this year. Bespoke mixes are good as you need only grow what suits you although it can take 2/3 seasons to find out what that is! I'd advise against July sown as the plants will most likely go to head which can cause a problem.

normally sow mid to later august pending when the wheat comes off. n quite right bespoke mixes do lend themselves better to the end user.. I think we will end up some mixed and some as straights to mix in... be qe quite a strong seed rate because of some of the straights inclusions

T Denne and Sons in Kent are very good. Ask for Nick, he knows his stuff and can advise on custom mixes suitable for your land and needs.

I would drill as soon as you get the opportunity, the cover crop can do nothing for you sat in the shed! We are trialling ways of getting the cover in before harvest, or growing companions with the cash crop that then become the cover crop. I would agree that seed set could be seen as a problem, or it could be an opportunity. We had some crops that were drilled earlier (late May) because the farmer decided not to drill Spring Wheat in the wet spring. Our cover crop got very forward and set seed, so we just rolled it to release the seeds and - Hey Presto - we created a new cover crop which then ran on into October, with new live roots, pollen + nectar, etc. It worked far better than I ever expected and was MUCH cheaper than the alternative of cutting the crop with a mower.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
