Cultivation 2022

So the top down hasn’t done a bad job, but fearful of wrecking it, so think it may be the old Simba discs, top down after? Or wait for rain subsoil after discs?
Have only top downed the lighter fields and after beans, down to 6km would disc quicker just to get some soul moving cover some cracks so it stays up top, will the Simba discs bite or die? 😂

Simba discs might bite if there is enough meat on them and you are able to pull them fast, otherwise will just skip along. I guess this was the thinking behind the Solo when they developed it. Tines would pull the discs into the ground.

Weaving Subdisc today in ex bean stubble, amazed at the job it did, thought it would come up all lumpy but it was quite rough after the beans were put in wet and not rolled. Lovely tilth and the Guttler roller doing a grand job, running quite shallow with wide feet. Fortunately ground not abrasive.

Bought a topdown, no till spring barley is too inconsistent. It’s too important and profitable a crop for us to be overtly dogmatic.
running at 3 inches which is what we used to do and it worked well, if it was damper we would broadcast a cover at the same time which we also used to do.

Joker has been doing a lovely job on OSR, Bean and Oat stubbles. Its as if the top couple of inches is so dry its just crumbling on its own

Will probably go over twice with that and maybe roll.

Will idealy subsoil stubbles in preperation for drilling Beans.

Normally just run the tinemaster for spring crops but will wait before we dare put that in the ground!

Lots of straw to work in. Yuk. I like this cultivator. Don't know why all the hate. I can easily drop legs in and out, and likewise adjust the disc depth. This will get a second pass this afternoon just to disc and press, then will roll.

Very similar system here. Impressed considering the conditions, not all like this but most of it.

Cos it needs a quadtrac with a constant drip (gush) feed of fuel to pull it! Does look to be doing a good job though…😉

This is a ST one. I'm using 6lt per acre, and a fraction of a litre to roll. The old girl only does 120hrs a year.

I think they key is altering the leg depth. There's no need to have them fully in and bringing up boulders. Some folk just don't like getting out of the cab with a spade. And proper deep work will be done as a separate pass - I'll trade some soloing for some subsoiling with my brother or father.

Wondered if I should be putting polydulphate on while it’s dry and the tramlines are still there. They say it’s slow release. Will it still be around after as winter of high rainfall or should I wait till siring. Some light sand.

Two month release time, so soluble just in time for winter rains!

I expect your FACTS adviser will confirm.

any one heard of
top phos what payne’s ferts are pushing
supposed to be protected phosphate for high ph soils

cultivatin stubbles would not think we had 61 mm on it
it’s taken it and gone
Is that the same stuff Timac sell?
Half the rate, but twice the price per ton!

Well what a difference a week makes, ended up with 40 mm on last Tues night /Wed morning
Got going with the trios on Thursday afternoon and in the 5 1/2 days have browned off over 400 acres, followed some with the cultipress to get these more difficult fields closer to a seedbed. Really need another 20 mm now to let cultivations carry on but will certainly keep on plodding on whilst the ground let's us

Topdowning spring crop land on a new farm that’s unlevel and following with a hired cultipress to drag with levelling board is going surprising well here.

Have you always been DD or is it bringing back memories of the good old days?!
Good old days! We are doing a shallow topdown pass for spring crops anyway and would be broadcasting a cover crop if it wasn’t so dry. We did this up to a couple years ago and worked well. Strict no till spring crops aren’t reliable enough here.
