Cyclists again

Am not saying farmers are angels, but the public see a tractor and it's a farmer. How many are contractors traveling miles between jobs/sites and not pulling over for traffic to pass. Like I said people are time poor now for many reasons.

Yesterday's event was a 300km ride, and a mate of mine (a farmer from Llanrhystud) finished second. Looking at his Strava record, his max speed down past yours @GTB would have been just over 30mph, averaging 24mph. I doubt many would have been faster than him down there.

He would have been on a bike which I'd say roughly set him back over £5k, which has state of the art brakes, so I doubt he'd have had too much trouble stopping if need be from those speeds.

I live near an A road, which is a bit of a rat run from the valleys. It's been a couple of weeks now since the last motorbike fatality, but this time of year they are unfortunately far too common an occurrence. I'd much rather see 60 cyclists than 60 motor bikes...
190 miles in 11hours 40 mins and nearly 20000 feet of climbing. Fair play

Expect they feel the same about farmers throwing hawthorn and blackthorn all over the road every hedgecutting season. Live and let live and some sensible dialogue with the club if it is an issue for you.
Presumably they'd rather catch the thorns in their face whilst they're still growing out of the hedges?
But I agree - live and let live.

That's the bit isn't it and it applies to most groups of folk that annoy others (the hunt springs to mind). It is the arrogance and self importance that irritates others. Have often heard the same about farmers and tractor drivers mind. :D

Whilst it's hard to disagree with both these points I always feel there is one massive difference. Farmer's don't drive around for fun, cutting hedges and leaving mud on the road. It's a job, cycling is a leisure pursuit.

It's not the best example but if you were walking down a bust crowded pavement and met a cleaner with his trolley picking up litter, you may be frustrated that he is blocking the way but I don't think you would get cross as he is doing a job.

We get cross when local cyclist here have a Sunday race. Try and stop the roads, signs everywhere. When questioned they say as it's a Sunday everyone should be relaxed. That's great if it wasnt for harvest!

There are plenty of folk ready to say tractors should pull over to let traffic past. I have yet to see a cyclist do that.
It shouldn't just be tractors, it should be Trucks, cyclists, horses, cars who only want to trundle about at 30mph. Everyone has the right to go at their own pace but not the right to inflict it on everyone else. I am all of the above, except 2, and an occasional motorcyclist as well. As I keep trying to say empathy is the only way that the roads will ever work.

They time trial on an evening along the A63 into Hull here, its 70mph and they are every 400m or so the trucks are having to weave in and out and everyone is having to move all over. I love to cycle but I can never understand how they get permissions as thye join at one junction go about 4miles then round a round about and back down the other side

It's crazy how they're allowed on the main route in and out of Hull!! Didn't a fella get killed doing it a couple of years ago?

Agreed on the point that everyone has the right to go at their own pace- and I don't get annoyed by being stuck behind an artic, a granny, or a tractor. What annoys me is tailgaters behind them, who have no intention of overtaking, but don't leave space for anyone to be able to do so safely.

The cycling clubs need to work on bike car etiquette , then come up with a workable system so we can coexist. Round here there are riding clubs that send out massive groups on crappy devon roads. When meeting up the first 30 should set off then the next 30 take a different route etc nothing wrong with taking the same route 20 minutes later. On the continent as you approach a group of cyclists you briefly sound the horn they then sort themselves out and wave you by, do that here they verbally abuse you and wave a digit or 2.

Funny how you're all in a terrible hurry yet have plenty of time to post on forums and social media.
Just because someone was in a hurry last Sunday rushing between 7 fields for 2 customers baling hay while the sun shines it a poor job if I cant post on here while having a coffee on a dull Monday morning while waiting for the lads to turn up who have worked all weekend.

Went to Exeter Saturday evening at 10pm signs everywhere saying watch out for cyclists. I never saw one! Roadworks signs aren't allowed to be put up before or left up after so why are cycle ones? Next time i shall ignore the signs!

Its not really even the farmers being in a hurry part that's the problem, it's the other impatient traffic that's stuck behind the tractor that's stuck behind the bicycles, unaware of the bicycles in front

On that we are in complete agreement.

I rode the Velothon Wales out of Cardiff yesterday.
Good event, showed off some very pleasant parts including the Tumble. Thanks for the closed roads, kept GTB and his tractor away at least!
Perhaps I'll take my summer holidays there.
Stayed in central Cardiff on Sat night, scary hen parties everywhere.

Was there also. Was a great day out, and seemed less congested than last year, where there were 14,000 riders.

I think the lack of motorised traffic caused accidents though.

There's got to be another forum somewhere with a thread just like this moaning about tractors holding everyone up and how they should be banned and the arrogance of the tractor drivers who don't pull over and ......
