I have some DAP to put on this spring. Does anyone know whether the nitrogen element in it behaves more like ammonium nitrate or urea when it is washed into the soil?

AN works as it does because of the nitrate. Urea works as it does because of the ammonia/ammonium.
I would therefore assume DAP works more like urea than Nitrate. Although there would be many more reasons it works however quickly it does.

Does it matter? DAP is readily soluble, so it will all be plant available within a day or two either way.
I usually find it takes a week longer for urea to work than ammonium nitrate. I also was wondering whether the nitrogen could get washed away like with ammonium nitrate.

This suggests that it behaves more like urea as ammonium is the primary product of the initial breakdown. The author does sell DAP and MAP, along with other compound products.
