Dealing with rushes...

Hi

I'm going to have to leave the office and do some proper work in the next few weeks... An increasing number of our fields have rushes on, some have almost completely taken over the fields.

What's going to be the best way of dealing with them? Have weed wiper, sprayer, topper, mower, just unsure of the best course of action.

A lot of this land is too wet to get on most the time so really need to try and hit them hard in this dry spell.

Cheers

Edging towards just the weed wiping - if we top and wait for the regrowth it might go wet again and not be able to get on.

Could do a little experiment and see what works best, there's so much to go at :banghead:

I weed wiped a real old crop of rushe last june….topped a month later and grazed it hard ..75% of rushes gone ..going to do same again

Cut them off and hit the regrowth when they are 12 inches tall. You are getting late in the day now im not sure what time of year they cease their antics.

Full rate 2,4D AND full rate MCPA. Plus adjuvant. Dont mess about they are hard to kill.

Around here consensus is not to spray till atleast July when they’re coming to seed/flowering as they’re actively growing then? Did a lot last year and got them all. Unfortunately new plants are emerging around them but the ones hit last year are dead!!!

Hard to know I guess it would depend on your area, latitude/altitude etc. Ive akways told folk to top them hard as early as they can and hit them with spray when young and fresh normally thats around June time.

Get it right and you will clear them out.

I hit ours with roundup in the weed wiper last year and it worked very well, only thing is you always get drips on the grass causing dead grass stripes.

Don't waste time and diesel cutting them, by the time they grow back it might be too wet to spray. Roll them, roll twice if you have time then spray with mcpa, 2,4-d and adjuvant. Don't be tempted to cut chemical or water rates.

Waste of time topping them at this time of year now. Usually end of June/beginning of July here just as the flower is on them. Hit them with a years legal rate and they will be no more. Top them a month later and job done. Have seen excellent results even on well established plants.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
