Wood fines are good. No experience of paper etc. Have bedded big beasts on very low quality haylage and poor hay.

Spoke to a boy yesterday who has ordered a load of oat husks to bed his cows on , as he can't get straw! He is going to bed one shed with it, and another with wood fines , and compare the 2!

Sold the cattle at sky high store prices a month ago

I wouldn't have thought the price was that high as sold some straw in swath and 6 weeks+ later 50/60 acres is still there!! He is not bothered about it, hasn't even tried to dry it out.

Price not been silly dear around here but waiting for it to kick in. Everyone in area is down in what they have produced or what they have been able to purchase. General view here is straw cut a 1/3 less. Put winter at 5/6 months, people a third short, all gears to waiting for single farm payment and let the prices go silly. Change of system here, found some good old hay at a good price, wont be feeding straw this year which I normally see as a very cheap way of feeding dry cows

Aye, prices are up here but not silly. We normally just take a load as we need it... we have ordered it all now and are filling the shed before SFP comes in and everyone jumps wanting it

I was on a farm in Kent yesterday that had thousands of bales of straw, they were busy loading lorries to go to Ireland!

yes there are some cheaper I agree . but one big one I know is £114 on barleyDepends where you get it I suppose

every farmers should first ask himself do I really need straw .could I use something else and if not can I get away with using less as panic will just make things worse

could be .straw market has been up and down for years but been far to many up this last few . who knows next year straw may be back to cheap again

There are plenty round here delivering hay in round bales one at a time for £25. Cheaper than bedding!

The cost of a slatted shed easily 4-5x of a bedded court for same number of cows
We have high level slats, great for the store cattle but I'm not too keen having cows on them. And you can't put newborn calves on them either...
