Most Brits I know just go for permanent resident status. Doesn’t seem to be a terribly long process. If I recall right the couple of friends who’ve recently applied have gotten it within six months.

Doesn’t seem to have all that much less than full citizenship. Just can’t vote or run for parliament.

i know it's a long way in the future for you but my cousin has been in ontario for almost 5yrs and is a bit pee'd at the delay in her citizenship application. maybe because she is 74 and lost her hubbie 2yrs ago. she has a daughter across the road from her, the reason for going in the first place. sorry if i have pee'd on your chips, just something to be aware of. all the the best.
Has she permanent residency though?
I think if I get support from this scheme I'll walk in without much bother.

I don't vote here most of the time, so wouldn't put me up nor down.

Just back from Canada and an interview with the provincial government immigration officials....

Staying at home for the foreseeable future(y)

I think I'd have got in without much difficulty, but I'd be crazy to go for it, too much well paid work of my own here. I'd not be able to get the work out there without having to clock up 10x the mileage of here. It's a bit boring, all flat land bare of trees

(the scheme I was going in with sort of tied you to the area of the town) and just too different a lifestyle, too sedate.
The hills won.

I'd like some of the winter weather though, -31 wasn't as bad as most would think, I never once felt cold (got stopped by the cops when I was looking at pickups in a sales yard, seemingly not wearing a jacket and gloves in minus 20 is suspicious behaviour out there) some of the houses were beautiful and the prairie women:love::love: need to try and import one:rolleyes:

At least now I can get stuck in with projects here without dreaming of running away(y)

Well for a wee while:D

If you looked the other direction you'd probably see my yard!

A thread similar to holwellcourtfarms I'm needing to make a choice about staying here and muddling along farming and welding, or packing up and going and doing something somewhere else.
The basics... 8 days away from 38. Not married and no kids. No debts and a small amount of cash and a bit off stuff to sell off.

The farm is 3 separate units (all rented) next to each other but split up by hills, a river and trees. I'm not going to say it's a terrible, awkward place and I want better because this isn't the case, but it isn't a very efficient place to have. Most of it I have till I retire, one 30 acre block for another 13 years.
I don't live on the farm, I stay a few miles up the road (only 4 miles, but takes 15 minutes to drive) where I've got sheds I weld and make stuff in. Father who's 70 this year, still stays in the farm house with step mother who's a fair bit younger and who's damned sure she's not moving(n) (to be fair though, the garden is lovely and I'd waste it which would be a shame)

My welding business is ok, mostly smaller jobs which suits me fine, as I can't be farming and concentrating on a big job at the same time.
Handling the steel is a pain as I reload the deliveries onto a hay trailer and take it the last 3 miles by tractor. No decent power supply, a generator powers the bigger machines.
Moving down the glen to another house closer to the farm would mean still having to drive up to the workshop, and I'm not even going to start thinking about building a shed on someone elses ground, done plenty of work on previous places just to end up walking away from it.

All in all... It's a bloody mess of a life. A constant grind without much fun. Always thinking.. I've got to do this.. Got to do that... And at the end of the day not very much to show for it.

I travelled when I was younger and and always wanted to stay for longer in Canada but never did it.
I've been self employed since 16 (with only a few spells working longer term with someone, year and a half at the most) I'm thinking a full time job would be good, it would leave the evenings and weekends for my own projects.

How the hell do you decide what to do(n)(n)(n)

Some views from those who've chucked in businesses, who've gone and never looked back, from those who've stayed and regretted it and the other way round too please.

My initial opinion is that you have the very opposite of a ‘mess of a life’.

On the face of it, and having just read your post the once, you may have the best of both worlds in that you have land and a valuable skill in welding. Please correct me if I am wrong but why be so quick give up what many would long to have?

Maybe this reply is too simplistic, so don’t be offended: but it seems to me that you have numerous options to mix and match farming and welding if you are happy to continue doing so.

a reworking of the way I run things is the aim now.
An eye opener was when I asked for references from people to prove that i was a self employed welder/fabricator. Some had them ready and printed out and phoned me to say they were done. others I had to phone or text a few times and they did something eventually. Others never bothered. I used to bust a gut to get some of them up and running asap, and they couldn't sit down for 20 minutes to help me, ill tell them to feck off and I'll do more time putting a Land Rover back together instead.
Going to have more of a social life, eat better (not too bad a diet already) poly tunnel is going up, and generally not work too hard and have more time on the farm.
Could still do with father moving somewhere, the drive down to the farm is a pain in the arse!

I’m sure you will reach a compromise situation, You really do have so much in your favour, but you need to look after yourself and do what is best for you, not others.

You are fortunate in seemingly have so many options to chose from. Do what you think is best for you: others may go with your choice and some may not, what really matters is your happiness and your welfare.

Do what you really want to do. Look after your friends if you can, but don’t worry a toss about what some may think or say behind your back. It is your future and you alone that matters, and never ever what some bitter and small minded little people may think or say about you.

:) I've always done what I wanted, or at least tried to do what I wanted... My problem was that I didn't know what I wanted :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Then you are already half way there to making the right choice for yourself and your future.

Ditch the dead wood, clear any old clutter that you will never need, get rid of most of the negatives in your life and concentrate on the all future positives, expand what makes you money, and above all, do what makes you happy.

Amen to that, Comrade Davie.... but I wouldn't have it any other way .

The most interesting characters in the world never know what or where, just the why.
When you realise that we only live a short while, then the why is pretty obvious, it's about enjoyment and positivity!

No problem with "positivity"(y) but no "relentless positivity" and empathy bs:rolleyes:

@davieh3350 is a babe-magnet though, and a celebrity... I heard his middle name is 'Relentless'

or is it 'Danger'?? :)
It's disorganised.
But yeah, a babe magnet. Was in the Kings Head bar in Winnipeg chatting to the bar staff when the pub was almost closed. I got a bit loud when I was telling a story and a lass further down the bar who was chatting to a guy heard the Scottish accent, she dropped him and came over and started asking questions. Really quite a hottie, slim and smiley and generally spot on. Wee while later she says "can I get your number :) ?"
"Yup, sure :D. I'll give you my email address though cos my phone doesn't work just now:rolleyes: ."
"Great, thanks... My mum would really like you:) "

I'm getting old:(
