Can someone explain the difference in a 250ah battery and a 120ah, for a horse box with basic living accommodation. Is it just a case of the bigger battery lasts longer? Struggling to justify the spend on a new big one for a couple nights I will be in it a year. (Mrs might be in it more often but I will be grand at home 🤣) big battery about 3x the price 😳

a 250ah battery has more stored power in it than a 120ah. So if say you are powering a 12 volt 55watt light bulb the 250ah battery will power it for a lot longer than a 120ah.

if say you were wanting a battery for starting an engine then cold cranking amps would be important which is a bit like how much punch the battery has rather than how long its charge will last.

250Ah (Amp-hours) is just over twice the storage capacity of a 120Ah. Assuming that they are both 12Volt batteries, of course.

If your Mrs wants to run something of 500watts power, the smaller battery would manage it for (500w/12V = 40A ish, 120Ah/40A = 3 hours) and the bigger one for about twice that.

Basically there's three types of common lead acid batteries. Automotive starting that you have for starting most vehicles, "marine starting deep cycle" are a half deep cycle for boats or RV's (leisure) and typically have a post and threaded stud terminal, and then true deep cycle are mostly 6V golf cart batteries and heavier typically only have a threaded stud terminal.

If you have a three times the price and twice the capacity battery, then I couldn't say if it's a solid plate true deep cycle, or a sintered plate marine deep cycle.

Doesn't matter too much, get the cheap one unless you're using the trailer often and discharging it more than halfway consistently. That will reduce it's life like Frankzy said, and then you'd contemplate the economics of the bigger one. Change all the bulbs to LED if they aren't already, way cheaper than the bigger battery.

You need to work out your energy requirements and this will advise you of the ah capacity you need. It's more sense to twin up smaller batteries to give you the capacity you need. The other thing you need to look at is how you are recharging them. Google the Practical Boat Owner forum on YBW. There's pages of advice on there
