Demo machinery.

Don't know why but we've always struggled to get anyone to demo us any machinery even though we generally buy new gear every year of some description.

We did manage to get a demo of a baler this summer, around 100 bales, but my question is, is it normal practice to receive a bill for the demonstration? Never heard of anyone else that's had demos get billed for it.

Thanks

Some pushy people get all the luck possibly?

If I were getting a baler on demo I would quite happily expect to put my own net string or whatever in.

However as we’ve never had a demo of anything new ever I’m not really sure on the exact procedure!

I am by no means a “serial demoer” but one particular dealer here that I’ve requested demos from in the past has, on both occasions on the day of said demo (cultivation equipment) has phoned up to ask that if everything goes well with the demo that we would agree to buy said machine!

In both cases I told them not to bother coming and have never dealt with them since.

I had a straw chopper on demo, it stayed on farm.
I wanted to try a muck spreader, was told by same dealer its £100/day which they will knock off if I buy it. It went back and had a bill.

Guess it depends on whether it is a demo or a machine your going to use all day?

I have had loads of demo machines over 30 years of Contractoring and always insure every item and all were returned with more fuel than arrived with. Had a vicon fast bale two years ago with tractor and just put wrap on.

Think it's getting way harder now as sales in virtually all dealership's have to stack up on their own merits, ie If delivering a machine for demo then haulage or the workshop junior or tech will be charging by an hour for every hour involved in delivery and collection of said machine to the sales department so this can often run into many hundreds of pounds per demo so tyre kickers aren't very welcome ☹.

I'll have to ask my dad what's actually on the bill.

We may well have bought it off him if he'd actually done what he was told and contacted my dad with the price as he was buying it and not me (via text, which I find quite unprofessional anyway) . But he never got back to him so he bought it elsewhere. But what can you do about that?

Yes we have paid for demos before and if the machine has been bought then get your money back

Surely you could have passed the price onto your father?

Speak about being petty.

Glad I'm not a salesperson.

I always like a price by visit or phone call and if phone call a text or email as confirmation of price and spec as had a notoriously slippery rep try and wriggle out of extras a few years ago.

What’s particularly wrong with a text if seems if it seems right price you can contact them to get it in writing
Some people don’t like you pestering them
Suppose it depends on individual some like to be run after and some dont
It can take a lot of time writing out quotes etc only to never get a return call
Courtesy can work both ways

Perhaps that is the reason for the bill?

Jesus Christ almighty, are you serious? You got the price, do you not talk to your father? If you bought elsewhere suck it up and pay the bill.

So it's not the salesmans job to actually deal with the person doing the business then? You use his son as the middle man?

And yes I did let him know and he left it up to the salesman to do his job. Strangely enough the other one managed. And the salesman in question has a history of being unable to do it with us and other people. That is not my fault.

Had a demo self propelled tmr mixer this year.
told him beforehand that i was only interested if he could prove/warrant that it would be cheaper to run than my current setup.
he said i should try it, as he was sure it would fit right in here. We could have it for a week, but he never gave any documentation/deal on running costs or price before. I think he just believed we would like it so much we wanted to keep it no matter what.
Used it for two days. It took forever compared to my current 2-mixer and shovel setup, and the cows dropped in milk, so we stopped as we didn’t see the point in continuing.
he sent a Bill for 500£ for cleaning and transport because i sent it back.
We have bought 3 new mixers from this dealer in the last 20 years and never had others. They have changed brand and sales staff. I will probably not buy from them next time.
