Deutz DX - engine problem

Hi

We have a Deutz Agrostar DX which has started blowing blue tinged smoke in the last 2 hours and leaking oil from what seems to be a joint in the exhaust manifold. Would anybody be able to suggest the likely cause - piston sleeve or ring failure maybe? - and any advice on repairs? Could we carry on for another handful of hours of is it vital we shut down now to avoid a much larger bill?

Thanks in advance

Is it using engine oil? How does it sound? Air cooled 913 or 912 engine, right? have you blown out the fins? the back cylinders are the ones that like to plug up and overheat, scuff the piston. If it sounds good yet, then no harm in running it another hundred hours, according to what I've been told. The piston and jug are already trash, and the bottom end doesn't care. That's assuming it's not continuing to run with plugged fins.

yes it is a 912 engine (DX6.11). I didn't notice it sounding any different - I wasn't driving though. We've stopped for now and the fins are not plugged at all. It did seem to be using bit of oil the other day according to the driver.

I've been told it could be any of the 'plugs' below the rocker arms that have come loose / failed valve stem seals / piston rings. I'm not sure how we can determine which, other than by taking thins to bits (not rally within my area of expertise).

Piston rings should show up as low compression on a compression test, possibly/probably a puffing blow by vent tube. Valve seals wouldn't make that much smoke, in my experience. Now that you mention the plugs, they are in the intake and exhaust ports in the heads, over the head bolts, so they could sure do it. No experience with that happening, I'd assume that would make the blow by tube puff also, and be easy to see if you remove the valve cover on the right cylinder, which is easy, but you probably have to remove the fuel tank first?

Have you taken any land out of production from last autumn?
