When I was in junior school, last century, we learned Rods, poles, perch and chains! Now those are things to clear a drain, things to grow beans up, something for chickens and something to pull the tractor!
I can visualise an acre. I just do not seem to be able to visualise a hectare!

I still miss it a bit. I know an ironmoger which still had items marked in old money in 2011.
We bought some timber recently all ordered in inches but marked in millimetres. The new shed was in 20 foot bays. Quite confusing.
Many moons ago our late neighbour built his own conservatory . He built the dwarf wall out of bricks and window frames out of timber but eventually the window frames began to rot so his widow was telling me that she got a local guy to replace the ' top bits' as it were with UPVC. However because her husband had measured everything in feet and inches they had a heck of a job to match the new window frames etc.( Which of course were measured in cm) to the old wall.

Funny that, I thought they were all made to measure not standard sizes, I've even had a round window made, I very much doubt that would be standard.

Well yes, they have horses in France too don't you know. :jimlad:
The horse as a unit of measurement is a nightmare and wide open to abuse, because the horse
is becoming smaller or tired! Just think back 50 ish years, a cortina gt had 75 horses and was
almost uninsurable due to its performance, a mini with 60 odd was dam right dangerous.
nowadays, an every day shopping trolley has 150

I'm thinking horses have been replaced by Shetland ponies going on the way these modern tractors pull

Well yes and no.Take our Valtra,it has normal gears with three splits in each gear,Cydesdale,Welsh Cob and Shetland. But they all have to drag the others around even when your not using them,so they are having to work harder and get knackered sooner. Fendt has a fleet of Thoroughbreds under the bonnet, very nice but bloody expensive,if something break the vets bill can be nasty, whereas a Belarus breaks down you just shoot it and call Tesco's. John Deere has a horse in there that has a weak bladder, and Ford only use Mustangs.
