to balance that I know of farmers around here that sold straw £/ac and after baling were being asked to reduce the price as there was so few bales
Like we said 2 months ago the standing straw auctions do the trade no good as idiot bidders give an inflated view of what it's worth , they then cry wolf and plead for compensation

Where does the HGCA get their average yield figures from ?

Who actually ever knows what a farm really yields other than the farmer himself ? Who knows all usage (on farm and at mills ?) who knows how much gets carried over in stores on farm etc ?

There are lies, damned lies & statistics. Some number crunching suit will publish a report to suit their own agenda that will be taken as gospel & publicised. `Tis the same in every business or where there is a chance of swaying a market.

Is he growing crops in a rotation with grass leys? That makes it easier to get good yields, proper mixed farming.

The more I think about this the more I don't think it's possible to do this accurately ? I would like @hgca to tell us how they arrive at the numbers ?

And owner of a weighbridge ?
actually yes well runs every first trailer load from each field over the weigh bridge of here and counts the trailers and weighs the last half load so fairly accurate as it is essential he knows exactly how many tons he has,i can tell you exactly how many tons an 11 ton marshall holds of 24 hour wilted silage,do you think livestock farmers are thick or summat,as fer the blasting its feck all and an easy live with for free use of a weigh bridge.

Not thick, think livestock guys are much more switched on than most ! but why not put every load over the weigh-bridge ? We have harvested today from 18% 69kg to 14.8% 84kg. - every load is different so the only way to be accurate is weigh and test every load

times money and it may not be a 100% accurate but it aint some one bull shitting down the pub about yields he has a fair idea of exactly what each field is yielding and how many tons he has for the year so can take a good stab at what he can sell and keep for the bull beef and dairy.

Well i have resisted putting my yields and especially margins on because they are crap. We farm heavy clay and or wet meadows which have not done well due to last winter and the cold late spring. If other people wish to comment on the fantastic year they are having best of luck to them but we are distinctly average at best.
I am a farm manager here most of the farm has just been let to another rose tinted man who thinks he can do better. I sincerely hope he succeeds. There is something in human nature that wants all of us to show that we are better than the next man. Rant over back to drying spring planted winter wheat that still is not truely fit.

You're not the only one. Crops didn't have a great start down here this year. Managed to get some mid April drilled spring wheat cut today, half was dry (died off!) and half was still 16-17. Be glad to be back to a more normal (hopefully) year after the past two - some good winter crops put in on time and in good conditions will be a good start.
