Hi all,
I'm a journalist at City, University London doing a student documentary on whether England should adopt a Scottish-style right-to-roam law. Looking to interview any farmers' on their opinion on a right-to-roam law; whether they are strongly against it, in favour or cautious and would prefer other measures (e.g. more promotion of the Countryside Code)
If you'd be interested please direct message me, comment on this post, or email me at: [email protected]
Thanks so much!

@geenadhillon It is a right to responsible access.
I have no real issues with it, but then I don't have the urban pressure that exists down south. Just the usual littering, dog shite in bags inconsiderate parking.
May I suggest thatyou guys down south really should have a bit of change of mindset, or even perhaps come up here for a visit to see what actually happens.

With 'Rights' also come 'Obligations'.

And until governments also enshrine the obligations to shut gates, pick up dog sh!t, avoid cattle when walking dogs where possible (and be aware that charging cattle are trying to attack your dog so be ready to 'slip the lead'), not drop litter, not use the right to roam as an excuse to be on land for coursing hares, trample crops or have BBQ's on tinder dry grass etc etc...
...And then back it up with meaningful consequences, and make police forces legally required to make sure all and sundry stick to their side of the bargain, then it's just a charter for people to misunderstand everything the countryside stands for.

"I HAVE THE RIGHT!"
As a Scottish farmer I can only add that yes, you may do, but some sensible politicians should have added the magic words "but also the obligation not to behave like a pr*ck", well thats the law 'the people' and the countryside need.

Unfortunately we've all seen the pictures of beauty spots after a bank holiday weekend, left covered in rubbish. This is how a significant number of the general public treat our beautiful countryside. People using rights of way also behave like this. They drop litter, they fail to stick to the paths, they allow their dogs to foul and don't clear up, or if they do they then leave the plastic bags behind because there is no bin in the immediate vicinity (which is actually worse than not picking it up in the first place). I am truly grateful I do not have any footpaths on my land, nor do I have livestock to worry about. It doesn't seem to stop people lobbing rubbish into or over the hedge, but on my small patch that is something I can and do cope with. I feel very sorry for any farmer or landowner who has a right of way across their land, let alone that being extended in any way. 🫤

Unless the general public are happy with me wandering through their gardens, with my dog, maybe stopping for a picnic; or ambling through their offices or factories; then as far as Im concerned then the further they are from me the better. Suggest if they would like to meander about the countryside then they should get together and buy it. Im not a huge fan of them being allowed to look at it for free either.

We've had a weekend of the footpath wankeers, footpath through the farm is a mile has 2 kissing gates and two normal gates, which one goes down a track through next-doors yard into the village, and you'll get 2 people go through a shut gate and leave it open for 180 cows to dissappear into the village 🤬
