The reason I used Biomulch in this situation is for the soil conditioners in it that help drainage. Also there is some N in it. The soil conditioners could be something for Shakerator? In terms of starters I am trying Plumbo's No.47 and emeralds Pro starter which is 7-29-0. Not trying it everywhere as soils are warm and in good condition at the moment and not sure we will get a benefit everywhere. Mainly using in high straw situations and low fertility soils.

Have you done any controlled trials? Have played with molasses as roundup adjuvent but not much more.

I think I just need to accept 20 years of power harrowing ( sometimes up to 5 passes) takes time to undo.....

Every tillage pass now has to justify itself. And if it's replacing pellets, roundup, and reducing risk on 60pc clay it will prob continue until we get growing perennial crops......

on loam here a complete no brainer to no till.

No, but it is recommended by Neil Kinsey (agri SC in his book) ans other Soil scientists like Mike Harrington. You can get SC from plumbo or Biotechnica. Just try some. Biotechnica are cheap. Just mix pan buster with your round up on half a field and see. It is not going to work miracles in one year but may help over time. I only use it on our heavy land.

Wheat into oats yesterday with the 750a on some of our stickier land (wont use the word heavy, but this stuff is not easy like most of my soils) not rolled, no need IMO

Not going to pre-em unless there is some moisture. I get good control with spring Atlantis, so happy to wait until it is moist and use a contact and residual pre-Christmas. I would not, on the other hand, be happy with a shed full of wheat seed and a farm made up of crappy spring crops. Every chance next spring will be bloody awful. If we get light rain at the weekend and it hasn't already chitted, another pass with the rolls may be worthwhile.

How much power harrowing to get this in with a winter cereal? And there are acres around here like it now.
Went to drill some wheat for a new customer today with the claydon and there was two bits of grass next door that had been ploughed out, no roundup had been used and it made that pic look like a good seedbed, field I drilled was Sosr which had been broadcast and scratched in, looked like it had been trodden in with a herd of cows it was that rough, with clods they size of cricket balls still, farmer had then mole ploughed it into lumps, didnt think it would go to be honest but to my surprise it went in really well, farmer impressed and his neighbour had a good nose, and said he will try some next year, just goes to show that sometimes the less you do the better it works(y)

its strange this year it all depends when you pulled the land up round here. I have been drilling into some lovely seedbeds which were following failed wheat from last year so moved early and should be good, but i was only just running clean with the vaddy, so plenty of moisture and our ex rape land that was discordoned and pressed once was the same and has drilled well into moisture. Then went to neighbour and his is cloddy and they are bashing it about before i drill it. Spent last two misty mornings putting pre ems on in fog seemed ideal conditions really. Wheat drilled saturday has good chits on now/

Drilled up for batch one. The rest is going to wait now. As are sprays which are also going to wait.

Didnt want my post to sound like its all great here got the rougher stuff to come i think, keeping going though as alot of rain would make it worse. some of our heavier land only comes reasonable and if you miss that the next stop is cat sh%t

Still got 140 WW to go in but am going to wait, rightly or wrongly. Sprayed off a carpet of BG yesterday in it, feel it`ll turn into a right bugger`s muddle if I drill now.
Interesting re the state of the soil, found the same here, some heavy land that never got drilled last year, ripped it up a while ago, came up very lumpy, much like the picture, just let it weather, ran a Carrier over it, drilled this w-end, beautiful seedbeds. So going to sit on my hands for the next few weeks!!

Another 100ac in today with the 750a

150ac of soltice going in tomorrow then onto a 120ac block of barley on a seed contract

200ac to go in behind linseed that's being cut at the moment and then we are at the mercy of the potato guys clearing land to get drilled up

Everything running rather nicely to plan !

Finished drilling the home farm today, just a few days contact drilling to do now. Giving up second wheats and growing more winter Barley has allowed us to get on and get it done with no waiting around. Weather has played its part also only 23mm this month so far. Sorry I realise its not been so good in other areas.

Could do with some rain! Can have some from down here, thunder and lightning the works, unexpected rain on wednesday messed the week up and well and truely back to square one now.

The unexpected 10mm on Wednesday well and truly screwed things up here as well, if forecast was correct we would have half the wheat drilled. As it wasn't, and it rained, we have zero drilled and the prepared ground will take time to dry out now.

Needed the rain though as our Linseed stubbles were rock hard and impenetrable before rain.

First wheats, done now to see how long my patience lasts before I do the seconds.
I saw you going the other day soon get over the ground! Have you been pleased with crawler now it has a few hours under belt?
I was getting on great but if you look over the line you will spot a rather embarrasing drill cock up. Has drilled lovely which makes it worse when its got lines in it.
