Drought affected swedes.

Has anybody ever broadcast forage rape onto drought affected swede crop. Drilled swedes about 5 weeks ago and put pre emergence herbicide on it. Got about 60% germination. Someone suggested broadcasting forage rape on to bare patches. Won't be able to roll or cover seed as swedes are dotted around. Seems a decent idea or will it be a total cats arse?

+1 to turnips as they will compliment the swedes better. We have the same problem with kale except our germination is below 60%

Will work a treat once it rains. I'm planning on mixing mine in with fertiliser which is due on kale.
That's a cracking idea. What fert are you putting on?

It had 185kg/ha of DoubleTop soon after planting. It will have around 145kg/ha of Nitram when plants are all 2-3 leaf stage. We don't put on any P or K unless index is below 3 (which is unusual). Usually aim for 75-100Kg N/ha depending on potential and supply/demand. This year kale went in late after a silage cut of Westerwolds ryegrass and hasn't done well. I hope it will recover and get going - it needs some rain urgently now.

I'll get some photos if I get a chance.

Will it be active after 5 weeks do you think?

Is it active after a week?:scratchhead:

I've never had any luck with it. I did a split field one time, one half being in unsprayed roots for Glastir and the other half given Butisan. I fully expected to see a distinct line, but both sides equally as weedy. I haven't used it since, just using a stale seedbed instead. I'm told a lot are doing the same.

If the field is still looking bare after this weeks forecast rain, I'd certainly consider spinning on some seed. Either maincrop turnips seed now, or some cheap stubble turnip seed in a few week's time. Do you have access to a slug pelleter? You can spin on 1kg/ac very quickly, and onto damp soil it will be away in a few days.(y)

I used pre emergence, the one you leave on the surface, not the banned one which was cultivated in.

There was one place where I had gone a bit wide with the sprayer and there was a triangular spike of weed.

Certainly worked!
