I do not like the look of the S Barley, that cannot perform, hope I am wrong as always!!View attachment 524868 View attachment 524870 View attachment 524872 We've got maize planted a month ago, ranging from good to not even germinated. I'm sure one field has missed all the showers .and spring barley with flag out at about a foot tall, so not all ok @Bossfarmer
Think your right, unfortunately. Ploughed up Hls grass, so last thing it needed was a drought.I do not like the look of the S Barley, that cannot perform, hope I am wrong as always!!
Yes, making good progress on that front where the weeds aren't completely choking them. Sprayed and walked some spring barley last few days, I will be most surprised if I average 5t/ha. My best bits look like @silverfox 's worst bits, except they have awns out....Are the beet through now @Flat 10 ?
but single furrow horse plough in those days,
Did they really ever plough 5 horse land?! I always thought that a lot of real heavy land in the shires was never ploughed until the advent of crawler tractors in ww2? Probably wrong though. In those days, Cowmangav, most ploughs everywhere were only single furrow.
Difficulty of one's land was rated according as to how many horses were needed to pull just the one furrow.
5 Horse land - very very heavy
4 Horse land - slightly less heavy.
3 Horse land - average
2 Horse land - easier than average
1 Horse land - boys' land
Of course, on the tops in Hampshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire, a 3 Horse team could usually manage two furrows and, in Dorset, three.
6mm mid Suffolk in a 20 min stormThings were getting very dry again here after last weeks rain with this heat.
Luckily and totally out of the blue this morning we had 8mm with some hefty hail stones in a storm although not enough to do any damage that i can see.
